Math Happenings 2006-07

CLASS OF 2007

There were five math majors in the Malone Class of 2007. Pictured above are Adam Huffman, Janice Murosky, Darla (Redmond) Farage, and Grant Johnson. Korey Heppeard (below) did not attend the graduation.

Adam was a double major (chemistry) and is currently working in his father's construction business.

Janice finished her work in December and taught math at East High School in Erie, PA, in the spring. She is planning on moving to North Carolina and teach (her fiancee will be attending Duke University).

Darla Farage also completed her work in December and will be attending the University of Akron this fall for graduate study in mathematics. Darla has been awarded a teaching assistantship at the University of Akron.

Grant Johnson will be returning to Malone next year to complete his second major: integrated science. Grant plans on teaching math and science at the secondary level. He was named the "outstanding senior in mathematics" this year.

Korey also completed his academic work in December. Following his career at Malone in baseball (Korey was an excellent pitcher for the Pioneers), Korey would like to coach as well as eventual teach math.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has been blessed to have David Gothard with us for the 2006-2007 academic year. His background and expertise in statistics was a real asset in the courses he taugth. We wish David and his family the best and hope to be abole to utilize his services in the furture.

In late September, math students along with Drs. Hahn and Williams went to Kent State University Stark Campus for a talk on "The Mathematics of Rubik'c Cube."  We also stopped for pizza on the way.

ALUMNI/CAREER DAY CHAPEL

The special speaker for our annual Alumni Chapel was Major Steven Shilliday. Major Shilliday graduated from Malone in 1995 with a degree in mathematics. After leaving Malone, Steve enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and trained as a navigator. He has been deployed to many parts of the world, including Afghanistan. Currently, Major Shilliday is a member of the Ohio Air National Guard and is stationed near Mansfield, Ohio. Steve and his wife, Deedra, have four children. It was a pleasure to welcome him back to campus and hear of his experiences.
