Men's Cross Country Team Takes Fifth At Ohio Intercollegiates; Women Place 10th

     The Malone College men's cross country team, ranked third in the NAIA, earned a fifth-place finish among a 42-team field at the Ohio Intercollegiates in Delaware, Ohio last Friday while the Pioneer women's team, also ranked third in the NAIA, placed 10th among 38 teams.
     The Malone men tallied 179 points for their fifth-place finish as The Ohio State University won the meet with 42 points.  The University of Cincinnati was second with 87 points, Kent State University took third at 110 and Miami University was fourth with 135 points.
     The Malone women finished with 257 points for their 10th-place finish as Ohio University took the women's team title with 63 points.  Ohio State was second (73), Case Western Reserve University placed third (161), Cedarville University was fourth (177) and Miami rounded out the top five (180).
     For the men's team, Ryan Kienzle (Jr., GlenOak H.S.) led the team with a 12th-place finish overall in a time of 26:20 while Justin Baum (Jr., Kenston H.S.) was close behind in 18th in 26:28.  Nik Schweikert (So., Beavercreek H.S.) was next for Malone, in 25th overall, in 26:42.  Paul Robinson (Fr., Field H.S.) and Evan Gaynor (Fr., Delta H.S.) also scored for Malone with times of 27:30 (60th) and 27:33 (64th), respectively.  Also competing for Malone were Chris Sinick (Fr., Field H.S.), who placed 111th in 28:14, and Mike Coates (Jr., Sandy Valley H.S.), who was 173rd in 29:10.
     For the women, Katie Bagley (So., Van Wert H.S.) took top honors for the team with a 27th-place finish overall in a time of 19:23.  Rebekah Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) finished 39th in 19:34 while Amy Iatauro (Sr., CVCA) was 42nd in 19:36.  Also scoring for Malone were Caity Schneider (Sr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 74th (20:02) and Loren Reineke (Sr., Anna H.S.) in 75th (20:03).  Also competing for the squad were Sarah Hines (Fr., Northmor H.S.) and Kalie Hauenstine (Fr., Ashland H.S.) who finished 78th (20:07) and 100th (20:29), respectively.
     This week, the Malone teams are idle and will next compete at the Southeastern Classic in Berea, Kentucky on October 21st. 
   
Women’s Soccer Posts 1-1 Record On The Week

     The Malone College women’s soccer team fell to Ohio Dominican University 1-0 on the road Tuesday before bouncing back in Saturday’s senior night contest to defeat Geneva (PA) College by a final score of 2-0.  After the 1-1 week, the Pioneers are now 6-5-1 overall with a 2-2 record in the AMC South Division.
     Against Ohio Dominican, the match remained scoreless until the 77th minute when the Panthers were able take a 1-0 advantage.  The Pioneers were unable to post a score of their own over the remainder of regulation, falling by the 1-0 final.  Malone tallied five shots on goal in the contest while keeper Stacy Messner (Fr., Green H.S.) posted 10 saves.  Ohio Dominican recorded 11 shots on goal and five saves. 
     Against Geneva, the Pioneers grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal in the 15th minute by senior forward Julie Herbst (Dyer, IN).  The game remained close throughout the remainder of the match until Malone was able to put the game away as Aleesha Denmeade (So., Hoover H.S.) and Herbst combined to assist Shannon O’Connor (So., Brunswick H.S.) on a goal in the 82nd minute, cementing the Pioneers’ 2-0 victory.  Malone recorded eight shots on goal in the contest while Messner tallied four saves.  The Golden Tornadoes posted four shots on goal and six saves.
     This week, Malone (6-5-1, 2-2-0 AMC S) will travel to Tiffin University (10-2-1, 4-0-1 AMC S) on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. match with the Dragons before heading to Urbana University (7-7-1, 1-3-0 AMC S) on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. contest with the Blue Knights.
 
Men’s Soccer Defeats Myers, Falls To Ohio Dominican

     The Malone College men’s soccer team split a pair of matches last week as the squad picked up a 3-1 victory at Myers University on Tuesday before falling to Ohio Dominican on Friday (also away).  Following the 1-1 week, Malone’s overall record now stands at 5-5-2 with a 0-4-1 mark in the AMC South Division.
     Against Myers, the Pioneers took a commanding 3-0 first half lead on goals by Marcos Batchelor (Fr., Colwick, U.K.), Barry McConnochie (So., Glasgow, Scotland) and Josh Jones (Fr., Warren H.S.).  Myers cut the deficit to 3-1 with a second half score but was unable to close the gap any further as the Pioneers came away with the 3-1 victory.  Malone tallied six shots on goal in the match while keeper Scott Garber (Sr., Heritage Christian H.S.) snagged seven saves.  Myers recorded eight shots on goal and three saves.
     Against Ohio Dominican, the Panthers held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal in the 20th minute.  ODU then tacked on two more goals in the 49th and 59th minutes en route to the 3-0 victory.  Malone mustered just one shot on goal in the match while Mike Porter (Jr., Highland H.S.) and Garber combined to make 13 saves.  Ohio Dominican posted 16 shots on goal and one save.
     This week, Malone (5-5-2, 0-4-1 AMC S) has just one match scheduled, a 1:00 p.m. contest at Urbana University (9-4, 1-3 AMC S) on Saturday.

Volleyball Tallies 1-3 Record In Four Conference Matches

     The Malone College volleyball team opened the week with a 16-30, 15-30, 14-30 road loss to then NAIA #21 Walsh University on Tuesday before falling to Ohio Dominican University on Thursday 27-30, 28-30, 24-30 (also away).  The Pioneers then returned home to host a tri-match on Saturday where they lost to Tiffin University 19-30, 17-30, 24-30 before salvaging a 31-29, 20-30, 31-29, 22-30, 15-10 win over the University of Rio Grande.  Following the 1-3 week, Malone’s overall record now stands at 16-12 with a 4-6 mark in the AMC South Division.
     Against Walsh, senior outside hitter Racquel O’Hara (Claymont H.S.) paced the squad with seven kills and 12 digs followed by senior middle hitter Ashley Yocum (Jonathan Alder H.S.) with six kills and ten digs.  Freshman middle hitter April Melquist (Boardman H.S.) added four blocks (one solo) and four kills while freshman setter Casie Mruk (Revere H.S.) tallied 13 assists.
     Against Ohio Dominican, Yocum led the way with 15 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks (three solo). Catie Huggins (So., St. Vincent/St. Mary H.S.) added nine kills while O’Hara posted seven kills and 11 digs.  Mruk tallied 23 assists and two service aces.
     Against Tiffin, O’Hara paced the squad with 11 kills and 14 digs followed by freshman Kristen Schoolcraft (McKinley H.S.) with seven kills.  Yocum added six kills and 12 digs while Mruk dished out 30 assists.
     Against Rio Grande, O’Hara once again led the way with 22 kills, 19 digs and three service aces.  Melquist followed with 14 kills while Yocum posted 13 kills, 13 digs and five blocks (one solo).  Mruk added 58 assists and 15 digs.
     This week, Malone (16-12, 4-6 AMC S) will host Notre Dame (OH) College (12-10, 7-0 AMC N) on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (19-9, 4-2 AMC S) on Saturday to participate in an invitational tournament.
 
Football Falls To Ohio Dominican 41-17

     The Malone College football team, ranked #19 in the NAIA, suffered a tough road loss to Ohio Dominican University on Saturday by the final score of 41-17.  The Panther offense racked up 298 yards passing and 169 yards rushing for 467 total yards of offense while Malone posted 74 yards on the ground and 284 yards through the air for a total of 358 yards.  Following the loss, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 3-2 with a 1-1 mark in the MSFA Mideast.
     Malone started the game on a positive note with a 13-play, 88-yard scoring drive which was capped off by a 15-yard touchdown run by junior running back Bernard Payton (Pomona, CA), giving the Pioneers an early 6-0 advantage (extra point attempt was no good). Ohio Dominican answered back right away, though, with 14 unanswered points on their next two possessions to grab a 14-6 advantage.  Malone was then able to trim the lead to 14-9 with a 23-yard field goal by place kicker Mike Skvor (Long Beach, CA) with 6:12 remaining in the second quarter.  The Panthers added another touchdown minutes later on a 72-yard scoring drive to secure a 21-9 halftime advantage.
     ODU further extended its lead to 27-9 with another scoring drive on the opening possession of the second half (extra point attempt was blocked).  Malone was able to get back in the game on a 64-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (Sr., Hoover H.S.) to wide receiver Derek Deardorff (So, Kenton H.S.).  Reifsnyder then hit fullback Elrazor Sharp (Jr., Lexington, KY) in the end zone on a successful two-point conversion attempt to cut Ohio Dominican’s advantage to 27-17 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter.
     Ohio Dominican then proceeded to put the game away as quarterback Chris Reisert connected on his fourth and fifth touchdown passes of the game over the Panthers' next two possessions to give ODU a commanding 41-17 lead with 11:05 remaining in the contest.  Malone was unable to cut into the Panther lead over the remainder of the game, falling by the 41-17 final.
     Reifsnyder completed 24 of 38 pass attempts on the afternoon for 284 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 27 yards on 13 attempts.  Payton posted 47 yards rushing and one touchdown on 17 carries to go with five pass receptions for 50 yards.  Tight end Laroi Johnson (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA) recorded six catches for 48 yards while Deardorff snagged three receptions for 87 yards and one touchdown.  Wide Receiver Josh Settlemire (Jr., Howland H.S.) posted three catches for 44 yards while wide receiver Tyler Davis returned to the lineup with three receptions for 36 yards.
     Defensively, linebacker Justin Murphy (Jr., Minerva H.S.) once again paced the squad with 11 tackles (four solo, 0.5 TFL) followed by defensive back Chris Cruise (Jr., Field H.S.) with eight tackles (seven solo, 0.5 TFL).  Defensive back Jason Frantz (Sr., Perry H.S.), linebacker Dan Hromada (Jr., Padua Franciscan H.S.), and linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (Fairport H.S.) each posted seven tackles in the game while defensive lineman Nick Rousher (Fr., Canfield H.S.) added six tackles.
     This week, Malone (3-2, 1-1 MSFA Mideast) will host NAIA #18 Urbana University (4-2, 1-1 MSFA Mideast) in this year’s homecoming game, slated for 2:00 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium.

Men’s Golf B Squad Finishes Third At Westminster Invitational
 
     The Malone College men’s golf B squad finished third out of ten teams at the Westminster (PA) College Invitational held at the New Castle Country Club on Monday.  The team posted a score of 318 for the day as Carnegie Mellon (PA) won the tournament with a score of 308.  Clarion (PA) came in second at 312.  Westminster finished fourth at 324 while St. Vincent (PA) came in fifth with a score of 330.  
     Garret Barbush (Sr., Manheim Central H.S.) led the Pioneers with a third-place finish overall posting a score of 76.  Jordan Grubb (Sr., Lake H.S.) followed with an 80 while Nate Garwood (Sr., Ridgedale H.S.) was one stroke behind at 81.  Michael Strayer (Fr., Riverside H.S.) also had a score of 81 while Mark Zimmerman (Fr., Glen Oak H.S.) rounded out Malone’s team with a score of 85. 
     This week, Malone will compete at the NCCAA National Championships at the River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio on Monday and Tuesday.
