Cross Country Teams Each Place Second At Southeastern Classic
The Malone College men's and women's cross country teams, which are both ranked fifth in the most recent NAIA national poll, each placed second among their respective 25 and 24-team fields at the Southeastern Classic in Berea, Kentucky last Saturday.
The men posted 63 points for their runner-up finish as Virginia Intermont College took the team title with 29 points. Cedarville University was third (78), Embry-Riddle (FL) University came in fourth (174) and Shawnee State University rounded out the top five (182).
The women's team tallied 71 points for their second-place finish as Cedarville University won the women' s team title with 39 points. Milligan (TN) College took third (82), Shawnee State placed fourth (158) and Lindsey Wilson (KY) College rounded out the top five (173).
For the men, Justin Baum (Jr., Kenston H.S.) led the way for the team with a fourth-place finish overall in a time of 25:50 while Ryan Kienzle (Jr., GlenOak H.S.) was close behind in eighth place in 26:01. Others who scored for the team were Nik Schweikert (So., Beavercreek H.S.) in 16th (26:26), Evan Gaynor (Fr., Delta H.S.) in 18th (26:33) and Paul Robinson (Fr., Field H.S.) in 20th (26:41). Also competing for the team were Mike Coates (Jr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 32nd (27:06), Chris Sinick (Fr., Field H.S.) in 43rd (27:27), Ryan Crocker (So., CVCA) in 50th (27:40), Keith Burns (So., Minerva H.S.) in 69th (28:08) and Dan McCracken (Fr., Anna H.S.) in 83rd (28:33).
For the women, Katie Bagley (So., Van Wert H.S.) paced the squad by finishing fourth overall in 18:46 while Rebekah Genter (So., Crestview H.S.) was close behind in eighth place in 19:00. Also scoring for the team were Loren Reineke (Sr., Anna H.S.) in 15th (19:14), Kalie Hauenstine (Fr., Ashland H.S.) in 19th (19:34) and Caity Schneider (Sr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 26th (19:49). Others competing for the squad included Sarah Hines (Fr., Northmor H.S.) in 27th (19:51), Lacey Watkins (Sr., Lockport, NY) in 63rd (21:08), Lexi Hartline (Fr., Strasburg H.S.) in 72nd (21:27), Rachel Heflen (Sr., Orrville H.S.) in 79th (21:34) and Amy Spring (Fr., Conneaut H.S.) in 96th (22:02).
This week, the teams are idle and will next compete at the AMC/NAIA Region Championships on Saturday, November 4th at Tiffin University.
Men’s Soccer Rolls To 5-0 Victory Over Rochester College
In its only match of the week last week, the Malone College men’s soccer team dominated Rochester (MI) College last Friday at home by the final score of 5-0. In addition, a home contest scheduled for last Tuesday against Geneva (PA) College was postponed until October 31st (3:30 p.m.) due to poor field conditions. With the 1-0 week, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 6-6-2 with a 0-5-1 mark in the AMC South Division.
Friday’s match remained scoreless until the 38th minute when Pat Quinn (Jr., Copley H.S.) scored on a cross from Brent Walker (Sr., Barataria, Trinidad & Tobago) to give Malone a 1-0 halftime lead. Quinn opened the second half scoring with a goal in the 58th minute, this time on a cross from Alex Ferrandez (Sr., Elche, Spain). Josh Jones (Fr., Warren H.S.) assisted Rick King (Sr., Howland H.S.) in the 69th minute to put the Pioneers up 3-0. Jones then added a pair of goals in the 74th and 86th minutes on passes from Jason Nelson (Jr., Green H.S.) and Luke Freckelton (Fr., Mannering Park, Australia) to cement the 5-0 victory. The Pioneers tallied eight shots on goal for the match while keeper Scott Garber (Sr., Heritage Christian H.S.) tallied three saves for his first shutout of the season. Rochester posted three shots on goal and three saves.
This week, Malone (6-6-2, 0-5-1 AMC S) will travel to Walsh University (10-5-0, 3-3-0) on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match before wrapping up their conference schedule on Saturday with 7:00 p.m. contest at Cedarville University (5-9-1, 3-3-0).
Women’s Soccer Posts 2-1 Record On The Week
The Malone women’s soccer team opened competition last week with a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame (OH) College at home on Wednesday. The Pioneers then cruised to a 5-1 victory over Rochester (MI) College at home on Friday before dropping a hard-fought contest at Walsh University on Saturday by the final score of 2-1. Following the 2-1 week, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 9-6-2 with a 3-3-1 mark in the AMC South Division.
Against Notre Dame, the Falcons were able to jump ahead 1-0 on an early goal in the 13th minute. Malone answered quickly, though, with a goal of its own just seconds later as Taryn Carlson (Sr., Poland Seminary H.S.) launched a deep shot that found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1. The Pioneers tacked on another score in the 39th minute as Carlson assisted Julie Herbst (Sr., Dyer, IN) on her tenth goal of the season to put the Pioneers in front by the score of 2-1. Malone then put the game away in the 70th minute as Aleesha Denmeade (So., North Canton Hoover H.S.) deflected in a pass from Shannon O’Connor (So., Brunswick H.S.) to give the Pioneers a commanding 3-1 lead. The Falcons were unable to cut into Malone’s advantage over the remainder of the match, falling by the 3-1 final. The Pioneers launched 17 shots on goal in the contest while keepers Stacy Messner (Fr., Green H.S.) and Sam Brown (So., Knoch H.S.) combined to make nine saves. Notre Dame tallied 10 shots on goal and 14 saves.
Against Rochester, Malone was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as Denmeade headed in a Kara Wenger (Sr., St. Clairsville H.S.) serve. Amanda Zabukovec (Sr., Brunswick H.S.) then added her second goal of the season in the 34th minute on a direct kick to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0. Carlson assisted Herbst minutes later, giving Malone a commanding 3-0 lead at the half. Herbst then added two more goals early in the second half for a “hat trick” before Rochester was able to post its lone goal in the 65th minute. Malone bombarded the Rochester keeper with 30 shots on goal in the 5-1 victory while Messner and Brown combined to make four saves. Rochester mustered just five shots on goal with 25 saves.
Against Walsh, the match remained scoreless throughout the first half before the Cavaliers tallied a pair of goals early in the second period to grab a 2-0 advantage. Malone answered back in the 66th minute as Denmeade beat the Walsh keeper to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Pioneers were unable to even the score, though, over the remainder of regulation, falling by the 2-1 final. Malone tallied 17 shots on goal in the match while Messner recorded seven saves. Walsh posted nine shots on goal and 16 saves.
This week, Malone (9-6-2, 3-3-1 AMC South) will wrap up its regular season schedule with a trip to Cedarville University (7-8-2, 2-3-2 AMC S) on Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. match-up with the Yellow Jackets.
Football Falls 34-13 To NAIA #2 University Of Saint Francis (IN)
The Malone College football team fell to NAIA #2 University of Saint Francis (IN) on the road Saturday by the final score of 34-13. Saint Francis entered Saturday’s contest with a 47-game regular-season winning streak, including 28 straight conference victories. Despite the Pioneers’ best efforts, both of these streaks remained intact as the Cougars amassed 369 passing yards and 151 rushing yards for 520 total yards of offense in the game. Malone posted 53 yards rushing and 290 yards passing on the afternoon for 343 total offensive yards but was unable to slow down the Saint Francis offensive attack in the second half as the Cougars scored touchdowns on three consecutive second half drives to put the game away. Following the loss, Malone’s overall record now stands at 4-3 with a 2-2 mark in the MSFA Mideast.
The game began on a positive note for Malone as the Pioneers were able to jump out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of Mike Skvor (So., Long Beach, CA) field goals before Saint Francis answered with a 12-play, 79-yard touchdown drive to take a 7-6 halftime advantage.
Malone was able stall the Cougars’ opening drive of the third quarter but the high-powered Saint Francis offense then took over as quarterback Eric Hooks threw touchdown passes on the next three Cougar possessions to take a commanding 27-6 lead with 10:01 remaining in the fourth quarter. The hosts were then able to cement the victory minutes later as linebacker Brian Kurtz intercepted a Malone pass attempt and proceeded to return it 65 yards for a touchdown to put Saint Francis up 34-6.
Malone answered back with an 80-yard touchdown drive on its ensuing possession as quarterback Brad Reifsnyder (Sr., Hoover H.S.) scored on an eight-yard run to cut the deficit to 34-13 (Skvor extra point was good) with 3:21 remaining in the game. The Cougars were able to recover the Pioneers’ onside kick attempt and then run out the clock to preserve the 34-13 win.
Reifsnyder completed 29 of 48 pass attempts on the afternoon for 290 yards with one interception and one rushing touchdown. Running back Bernard Payton (Jr., Pomona, CA) posted 42 yards rushing on 14 carries to go with nine catches for 70 yards. Wide Receiver Josh Settlemire (Jr., Howland H.S.) snagged seven pass receptions for 60 yards while wide receiver Derek Deardorff (So., Kenton H.S.) caught three passes for 100 yards with a long of 82.
Defensively, linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (Jr., Fairport H.S.) posted 10 tackles (three solo, 1.5 TFL) while linebacker Justin Murphy (Jr., Minerva H.S.) also recorded 10 tackles (two solo, 0.5 TFL). Cornerback Chris Cruise (Jr., Field H.S.), defensive back Jason Frantz (Sr., Perry H.S.) and linebacker Jamal Gambrell (Jr., Maple Heights H.S.) each followed with eight tackles in the game while defensive lineman Nick Rousher (Fr., Canfield H.S.) posted one sack.
This week, Malone (4-3, 2-2 MSFA Mideast) will travel to Taylor (IN) University (1-6, 0-4 MSFA Mideast) for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with the Trojans.
Volleyball Splits Four Matches At St. Francis (IL) Tournament
The Malone College volleyball team traveled to the University of St. Francis (IL) in Joliet, Illinois over the weekend to compete in four matches at the annual Big Guns Tournament. The Pioneers opened play on Friday afternoon with a 21-30, 28-30, 27-30 loss to Saint Ambrose (IA) University before picking up a 30-15, 30-20, 29-31, 30-22 victory over Aquinas (MI) College later in the evening. On Saturday, Malone defeated the tournament’s host (St. Francis) 30-21, 27-30, 30-22, 30-23 before narrowly dropping a five-game match 30-27, 22-30, 27-30, 30-28, 9-15 to Illinois Institute of Technology. Following the 2-2 week, Malone’s overall record now stands at 20-16 with a 5-7 mark in the AMC South Division.
Against Saint Ambrose, senior outside hitter Racquel O’Hara (Claymont H.S.) paced the squad with nine kills and 20 digs followed by senior middle hitter Ashley Yocum (Jonathan Alder H.S.), who tallied eight kills and four service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Catie Huggins (Saint Vincent/Saint Mary H.S.) posted eight kills while freshman outside hitter Alyssa Dibell (Fairless H.S.) recorded seven kills and fifteen digs. In addition, freshman setter Casie Mruk (Revere H.S.) dished-out 25 assists.
Against Aquinas, Yocum drilled 22 kills, 18 digs and four service aces. Freshman middle hitter Kristen Schoolcraft (McKinley H.S.) followed with 16 kills and four blocks (one solo) while O’Hara tallied 12 kills and 18 digs. Dibell smashed 11 kills with four aces and four blocks (two solo) as Mruk contributed 61 assists.
Against St. Francis, O’Hara paced the squad with 19 kills and 17 digs followed by Yocum with 17 kills, 19 digs and eight blocks (three solo). Dibell added 11 kills, six blocks (two solo) and 13 digs while Mruk recorded 50 assists and three service aces.
Against Illinois Tech., Yocum led the way with 23 kills, five blocks, and 17 digs. O’Hara followed with 15 kills and 22 digs while junior libero Amanda Robinson (Claymont H.S.) tallied 12 digs and five service aces. Mruk chipped in 52 assists and 16 digs in the narrow defeat.
This week, Malone (20-16, 5-7 AMC S) will host NAIA #17 Walsh University (28-2, 11-1 AMC S) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Urbana University (26-10, 7-5 AMC S) on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. match. The squad will then return home on Friday to host NAIA #20 Cedarville University (30-5, 8-3 AMC S) at 7:00 p.m.
