Baseball Tallies 4-5 Record in Arizona
The Malone College baseball team posted a 4-5 record over spring break last week as the squad competed in a total of nine varsity games at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.  The Pioneers opened play last Monday morning with a tough 4-3 loss to the University of Saint Mary (KS) before bouncing back later in the day to record a 9-7 win in game two of the doubleheader.  The Pioneers faced Saint Mary in another pair of games on Tuesday, claiming victories of 11-4 and 6-2.  On Wednesday, Malone suffered a pair of losses to Dakota State (SD) University, dropping a close 10-inning contest 3-2 in the opener before falling 5-1 in the nightcap.  The Pioneers pummeled Wartburg (IA) College 15-3 on Friday afternoon, but then wrapped up the trip on Saturday by losing two more contests to Dakota State by the final scores of 8-1 and 10-5. Following the 4-5 spring break trip, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 5-10.
Against Saint Mary in game one on Monday, Malone knotted the contest at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning following Josh Spencer’s (Jr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) two-run homer.  However, the Spires answered back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then shut down the Pioneers’ rally attempt in the top of the seventh to secure a 4-3 Saint Mary victory.  Adam Boudler (So., Louisville H.S.) started on the mound and took his second loss of the season despite surrendering just four runs (three earned) on seven hits.  The sophomore right-hander struck out eight batters without surrendering a walk over his six innings of work.  Malone’s first run of the game came on Scott McIlvain’s (So., Marlington H.S.) two-out RBI single in the top of the third inning.
In game two with Saint Mary on Saturday, the Pioneers used a four-run fourth inning to pull away for the 9-7 victory.  Todd Liberatore (Fr., Tusc. Central Catholic), Jimmy Dowling (Jr., Tuslaw H.S.), and McIlvain combined to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief as Liberatore recorded his first victory of the season and McIlvain earned his first save.  Jon Lutton (So., Louisville H.S.) had an outstanding performance at the plate as he smacked a three-run home run and a pair of run-scoring singles for a total of five RBI in the contest.
In Tuesday’s opener against Saint Mary, Malone trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning but then exploded for 10 runs over the next three innings to claim the 11-4 win.  Ryan Hartong (So., Dalton H.S.) recorded his first victory of the season after holding the Spires to four runs on eight hits over seven innings pitched.  The Pioneers tallied 10 hits in the game as Lutton posted four RBI.  In addition, McIlvain scored two runs and went 2-3 at the plate with two RBI.
In game two with Saint Mary on Tuesday, Malone jumped out to an early 4-0 third-inning lead.  The Spires cut the deficit to two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but Saint Mary was unable to get any closer over the remainder of the contest as the Pioneers added runs in both the fifth and sixth innings en route to the 6-2 victory.  Zach Winkhart (Jr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) went the distance on the mound for Malone, claiming his first victory of the season after limiting the Spires to just two unearned runs on five hits.  The Pioneers smacked 12 hits in the contest as Sam Campitella (So., Jackson H.S.) and John Stallings (Jr., Louisville H.S.) each went 3-4 at the plate.
Malone trailed 1-0 entering the seventh inning of Wednesday’s opener against Dakota State before Troy Richeson (Jr., Minerva H.S.) delivered a clutch two-out run-scoring triple to send the contest into extra innings.  The game remained tied at 1-1 entering the top of the tenth before Zac Barson’s (So., Canton South H.S.) sacrifice fly put Malone in front 2-1.  Dakota State was able to rally in the bottom of the inning, though, claiming the extra-inning 3-2 victory after two runs scored on a one-out, bases loaded double.  Liberatore started the game on the mound, surrendering just one unearned run over seven innings pitched.  Justin Corbett (Fr., Cuyahoga Falls) relieved Liberatore in the eighth and shut down Dakota State for two innings, but was credited with the loss after leaving the game with the bases full and one out in the bottom of the tenth.
Against Dakota State in game two on Wednesday, the Pioneers were held to just one run on six hits in the 5-1 defeat.  Dowling pitched seven strong innings for Malone, suffering his first loss of the season after giving up five runs (two earned) on ten hits while striking out five.  McIlvain went 2-2 at the plate with a pair of singles.
In Friday’s contest with Wartburg, the Pioneers tallied 15 runs on 16 hits as they overwhelmed the Knights in the 15-3, six-inning victory.  Mike Yost (So., Marlington H.S.) started on the mound and claimed his first win of the season after holding Wartburg to three runs on six hits over five innings pitched.  Six different Malone batters clubbed at least two hits in the contest as Mike Tozzi (So., Sandy Valley H.S.) went 3-4 with four RBI.
Against Dakota State in Saturday’s opener, the Pioneers were held to just one run on eight hits in the 8-1 defeat.  Boudler started and took the loss after surrendering eight runs on 11 hits over 3 1/3 innings of work.
Malone trailed 3-2 entering the fifth inning of Saturday’s second game with Dakota State before the Trojans were able to pull away with a six-run fifth-inning en route to the 10-5 win.  Campitella started on the mound and took his first loss of the season after giving up eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits over four innings pitched.  McIlvain went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI double.
This week, Malone (5-10, 0-0 AMC N) will travel to Concordia (MI) University (6-3, 0-0 WHAC) on Friday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader before heading to Madonna (MI) University (8-5, 0-0 WHAC) on Saturday for two games beginning at 1:00 p.m.
