Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Notre Dame

In its first competition since spring break, the Malone College baseball team claimed a pair of American Mideast Conference North Division victories over Notre Dame College at home on Saturday afternoon by the final scores of 13-11 and 6-5.  The squad was originally slated to play the Falcons in a home doubleheader on Friday and then travel to Notre Dame for another pair of games on Saturday, but the wet weather played havoc with the schedule, forcing Friday’s doubleheader to be played on Saturday (the Pioneers will now play two games at Notre Dame on Monday afternoon).  With the 2-0 week, Malone now holds a 7-10 overall record with a 2-0 mark in the AMC North.
In Saturday’s home opener, the Pioneers scored nine runs in the first three innings to take a commanding 9-3 lead before holding off a late Notre Dame surge for the 13-11 victory.  Sophomore Adam Boudler (Louisville H.S.) started on the mound and claimed his first victory of the season after giving up six runs over four innings pitched.  Malone smacked 15 hits in the contest as senior Josh Spencer (Canton Central Catholic H.S.) went 3-4 with three RBI and junior Troy Richeson (Minerva H.S.) went 2-4 with a three-run homerun.  Senior Bob Dubovec (Kenston H.S.) was 2-4 at the plate with a solo homerun while sophomore Jon Lutton (Louisville H.S.) clubbed a three-run homer.
In Saturday’s second contest, the Pioneers tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead.  Notre Dame answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to one but could not completely close the gap, falling by the 6-5 final (the game was shortened to six innings due to darkness).  Junior Jimmy Dowling (Tuslaw H.S.) started on the mound and posted his first victory of the season after surrendering five runs over five and one-third innings pitched.  Sophomores Zac Barson (Canton South H.S.) and Ryan Hartong (Dalton H.S.) each smacked home runs for Malone while Spencer went 2-2 at the plate with one run scored.
This week, Malone (7-10, 2-0 AMC N) will travel to Notre Dame College (7-9, 0-2 AMC N) on Monday afternoon for a make-up doubleheader with the Falcons at 1:00 p.m.  The Pioneers will then host a single nine-inning game against Baldwin-Wallace College (6-6, 0-0 OAC) on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. before traveling to Youngstown State University (7-11, 3-0 Horizon League) on Wednesday for a single nine-inning contest with the NCAA Division I Penguins at 3:00 p.m..  On Friday, the squad will host a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader against Seton Hill (PA) University (15-6) and will then wrap up the week on Saturday by traveling to Seton Hill for two more contests, also starting at noon.
