Baseball Falls To Akron, Point Park

The Malone College baseball team completed just two of its five scheduled games last week as the squad dropped a nine-inning contest at the University of Akron on Tuesday afternoon by the final score of 6-3 before falling 10-4 to Point Park (PA) University at home on Saturday afternoon.  A doubleheader that was slated for Friday afternoon at Point Park and the second game of Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader at Malone (total of three games) were all postponed due to the poor weather conditions (all three of these American Mideast Conference North Division games will be made up on Tuesday at Point Park in a tripleheader, starting at 11:00 a.m.).  Following the 0-2 week, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 10-17 with a 3-2 mark in the AMC North.
In Tuesday’s contest with NCAA Division I Akron, Malone jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in each of the first two innings.  The Pioneers were then able to maintain their advantage until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Zips rallied for three runs to pull ahead 3-2.  A run-scoring double by senior Bob Dubovec (Kenston H.S.) in top of the seventh knotted the game at 3-3 but Akron was able to plate three more runs in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead 6-3.  Malone threatened in the ninth by bringing the tying run to the plate with two runners on base and only one out but Akron’s closer was able to induce a double play to preserve the Zips’ 6-3 victory.  Junior Zach Winkhart (Canton Central Catholic H.S.) took the loss (1-2) after entering the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning and surrendering three runs on three hits.  Sophomore Jon Lutton (Louisville H.S.) went 1-2 at the plate with two walks and one stolen base while senior Josh Spencer (Canton Central Catholic H.S.) went 1-4 with one run scored and two stolen bases.  Dubovec finished the game with two RBI.
In Saturday’s wintry game with Point Park, Malone scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the contest at 3-3.  Point Park then put the game away, though, by scoring seven runs over the final two innings to cement the 10-4 victory.  Junior Jimmy Dowling (Tuslaw H.S.) started on the mound and took the loss (2-2) after giving up five runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings pitched.  Lutton, junior Troy Richeson (Minerva H.S.) and sophomore Scott McIlvain (Marlington H.S.) each smacked two hits in the contest.
This week, Malone (10-17, 3-2 AMC N) will look to make up three games at Point Park (10-6, 1-0 AMC N) on Tuesday in a tripleheader that is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.  The Pioneers will then travel to Myers University (4-19) on Friday for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader before returning home on Saturday to face the Mustangs in two more games, starting at 1:00 p.m.

Softball Drops Pair Of Games To Geneva

In its only contests of the week, the Malone College softball team dropped a pair games to Geneva (PA) College at home last Tuesday by final scores of 8-2 and 1-0.  Doubleheaders scheduled for Thursday and Saturday with American Mideast Conference South Division opponents Urbana University and Shawnee State University were both postponed due to poor weather conditions (Thursday’s home contests with Urbana have been rescheduled for April 28th while Saturday’s doubleheader at Shawnee State will be made up this Thursday at 3:00 p.m.).  Following the 0-2 week, the Pioneers' overall record now stands at 5-11 with a 0-0 mark in the AMC South.
In Tuesday’s opener with Geneva, junior Ashlee Locker (Strasburg H.S.) quickly put Malone in front 1-0 with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first.  This slim Pioneer advantage would then remain intact until the top of the fourth inning when the Golden Tornadoes exploded for seven runs to pull ahead 7-1.  Malone tallied one run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by junior Holly Christopher (Garfield H.S.) but the squad was unable to close the gap any further, falling by an 8-2 final.  Cori Helm (Sr., Marion, IN) started on the mound and took the loss (3-4) after surrendering seven runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings pitched.
In game two with Geneva, the Pioneers were held to four hits and no runs in the 1-0 defeat.  Following a leadoff double in the top of the second inning, the Golden Tornadoes scored the only run of the contest with an RBI single.  This solo tally would be all Geneva starting pitcher Ashley Archer would need as she stifled the Malone offense over seven innings to notch the complete game shutout victory.  Junior Kathryn Bzdafka (Avon Lake H.S.) also went the distance on the mound, suffering the tough loss (1-5) despite allowing just one run on five hits over seven innings pitched.  The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning as junior Elisha Bierman (Keystone H.S.) drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Archer was able to escape trouble and preserve the one-run lead by striking out junior pinch-hitter Rebekah Martin (Lakewood H.S.).
This week, Malone (5-11, 0-0 AMC S) will travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (16-4, 2-2 AMC S) on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader before facing off with Shawnee State University (10-5, 0-0 AMC S) on the road Thursday in a pair of make-up games, also starting at 3:00 p.m.  The squad will then travel to Ohio Dominican University (11-17, 6-0 AMC S) for a pair of games on Friday at 3:00 p.m. before returning home on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with Cedarville University (8-18, 1-5 AMC S).
