2007 Spring Season Recap

Women’s Golf Completes Shortened Spring Season

The Malone College women’s golf team, led by fourth-year head coach Max Baker, completed a very shortened spring season in mid April after several of its matches on the schedule were cancelled due to weather or other circumstances. The squad opened the campaign by competing in the Capital University Invitational in early April and finishing seventh among a 14-team field.

At Capital, the team tallied a two-day score of 761 (379-382) as DePauw (IN) University took the team title at 654 (319-335). Otterbein College and Olivet (MI) College tied for second at 699, Ohio Northern University was fourth at 710 and John Carroll University rounded out the top five at 740.

Elena Duncan (Fr., Winona Lake H.S.) paced the Pioneers at the event with a 25th-place finish overall at 184 (90-94) while Jen Blocker (Fr., Westerville H.S.) was close behind at 188 (95-93). Megan Grubb (Jr., Lake H.S.) posted a 192 (99-93), Laurie Grubb (Fr., Lake H.S.) carded a 213 (111-102) and Jenny Green (Jr., Oak Harbor H.S.) had a 219 (95-124). Carinna Baldner (Jr., Hillsdale H.S.) competed as an individual and finished with a score of 238 (124-114).

Malone was then scheduled to compete at the Bethel (IN) College Invitational but it was cancelled due to weather. Then, the Westminster (PA) College Invitational, where the Pioneers were slated to play next, was also cancelled due to weather conditions.

Another scheduled match that the team had hoped to get in fell through because the opponent did not have enough players available on their team for that day. So, a schedule that did have at least four matches on it became just a one-match campaign for the ’07 Pioneer squad.

Other members of the 06-07 team included Heather Hall (Jr., Bellefontaine H.S.), Sarah Ramsey (Fr., Kenton Ridge H.S.) and Evyn Steinberger (So., Springfield North H.S.) and Heather Grovemiller (Sr., Perry H.S.), who played only in the fall.

Academically, two Malone athletes earned the 2007 Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete award as Baldner and Green earned the recognition.

With Grovemiller, a senior, being the only athlete who will not be back next year, Malone will definitely benefit from a valuable year of experience gained by basically the entire team. And with the all-important fall season quickly approaching, which is when NAIA teams qualify for the women’s golf spring national tournament, the Pioneers will certainly be working hard to improve upon last fall’s third-place finish at the AMC/Regional Tournament.
