English Studies Goals
 
English and Integrated Language Arts majors and minors will be able to:
  1. Communicate effectively in oral and written language using the critical thinking skills of summary, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
  2. Analyze American, British, non-Western, and Western authors, genres, and literary history.
  3. Appreciate the diversity of human experience as expressed in literature and language.
  4. Appreciate and value literature as an expression of both the beauty and problems of the human experience.
  5. Apply a variety of theoretical approaches to texts, including application within a Christian context.
  6. Study the history and structure of the English language.
  7. Write for a variety of rhetorical contexts and understand the ways that purpose, process, subject matter, form, style, tone, and diction can be shaped to address a particular audience in a specific situation.
  8. Pursue individual interests such as creative and expository writing and advanced topics in composition and literature.
  9. Study a foreign language to contribute to the understanding of English and literature as well as muticultural diversity.
  10. Pursue further study of language and literature through participation in From the Catacombs, The Write Place, the "Evening with" series, Christianity and Literature conferences, the Stratford/Shaw Festivals, study abroad, and internships for practical experience.
  11. Be prepared to enter a variety of professions such as business, law, editing, library science, medicine, ministry. teaching, writing, or graduate study in English or the humanities.
