Football Defeats Trinity International (IL) 32-27

The Malone College football team escaped Deerfield, Illinois on Saturday with a 32-27 win after surviving six turnovers and a pair of late Trinity International scoring drives.  With less than 10 seconds remaining in the contest, the Trojans had two shots at the endzone from the Malone 15-yard line but defensive backs Kenny Williams (So., Bedford H.S.) and Dennis Thornton (Jr., Shaker Heights) were able to break up consecutive Trinity pass attempts at the goal line to preserve the Pioneers’ season-opening victory.
Malone (1-0) racked up 148 rushing yards and 185 passing yards for 333 total yards of offense on the afternoon but the squad struggled to take care of the football throughout the game with three fumbles and three interceptions.  Trinity (0-1) was held to negative three (-3) yards on the ground but posted 331 passing yards.  The Trojans also had trouble hanging on to the ball as Trinity lost one fumble and threw three interceptions.
A 17-yard field goal by kicker Mike Skvor (Jr., Long Beach, CA) opened the scoring, giving Malone an early 3-0 lead five minutes into the first quarter.  The Trojans answered back on their next possession, pulling ahead 7-3 after a 41-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Bennett to wide receiver Jacob Love.  Following a pair of Pioneer fumbles on Malone’s next two possessions, Bennett connected on another scoring strike, this one a nine-yard pass to wide receiver Deon Dukes that increased Trinity’s lead to 14-3.  Following a quick three and out on Malone’s following possession, Trinity began to drive down the field once again before Pioneer safety Dan Beachy (Sr., Lake H.S.) intercepted a Trojan pass attempt and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-9 (Skvor’s extra point attempt was no good).  With the momentum back, Malone was able to pull ahead minutes later as quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh (Jr., Eastland, TX) found fullback Sam Cartwright (Jr., East Canton H.S.) in the endzone for a five-yard touchdown pass.  Orsagh then hit running back Bernard Payton (Sr., Pomona, CA) with a pass on the ensuing two-point conversion try to put the Pioneers in front 17-14 midway through the second quarter.  The Trojans later tacked on a 20-yard field goal just before halftime to tie the game at 17-17.
Skvor opened the second half scoring with a 37-yard field goal to give the lead back to Malone but Trinity answered quickly with a 28-yard kick that knotted the contest at 20 with 4:33 left in the third quarter.
The seesaw battle continued on the Pioneers’ next possession as Malone pulled ahead 26-20 after Payton found the endzone on a 14-yard screen pass from Orsagh (Skvor’s extra point attempt was no good).  The Trojans wasted very little time in answering back, though, as just four plays later Bennett found Love on a 61-yard touchdown pass that gave Trinity a 27-26 lead (extra point attempt was good) with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.
Malone fought back once again in the fourth with a lengthy 14-play, 71-yard touchdown drive that was capped off by Payton’s three-yard touchdown plunge.  The Pioneers then attempted a two-point conversion, but quarterback Dominic Liberati’s (Jr., Union Local H.S.) pass attempt was incomplete, leaving Malone with a five-point, 32-27 lead with eight minutes remaining.
Trinity threatened by putting together two drives deep into Pioneer territory but the Malone defense held the Trojans out of the endzone both times as Thornton intercepted a pass at the Pioneer 10-yard line to stop the first drive and then broke up a pass at the goal line as time expired to end the second scoring threat.
Orsagh and Liberati split time under center throughout the game as Orsagh connected on 13 of 24 pass attempts for 135 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Liberati completed six of his 13 passes for 50 yards with one interception.  Payton tallied 133 yards rushing on 28 attempts to go with four catches for 35 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving).  Wide receiver Derek Deardorff (Jr., Kenton H.S.) also pulled in four passes for 35 yards while fellow wideout Josh Settlemire (Jr., Howland H.S.) had three catches for a team-high 45 yards.  Cartwright recorded three catches for 29 yards and one touchdown and wide receiver Tyler Davis (Jr., Teays Valley H.S.) posted three catches for 25 yards in addition to returning four kickoffs for 116 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Dan Hromada (Sr., Padua Franciscan H.S.) paced the squad with eight tackles (four solo, 1.5 TFL, one sack) followed by Thornton, who tallied six tackles (two solo, one TFL), two pass break-ups, and the crucial interception.  In addition, defensive back Shaun Paythress (Fr., Euclid H.S.) forced and recovered one fumble, Beachy and Williams each posted one interception and defensive back Chris Cruise (Sr., Field H.S.) and defensive linemen Jeff Jeffries (Sr., Meadowdale H.S.) and Kyle Slutz (Sr., Tusc. Valley H.S.) each tallied one sack.
This week, Malone will travel to Azusa Pacific (CA) University (0-2) on Saturday (September 8th) for a 5:00 p.m. PDT (8:00 p.m. EDT) match-up with the Cougars.  Azusa leads the all-time series with the Pioneers 1-0 after defeating Malone 31-6 in Canton last season.

Men’s Soccer Opens Season With 2-1 Victory Over Ashland

The Malone College men’s soccer team, under the direction of second-year head coach Marquis Walker, began its 2007 season on a strong note Wednesday night as the squad posted a 2-1 win on the road over NCAA Division II Ashland University.
The match remained scoreless until the 66th minute when midfielder Josh Jones (So., Warren H.S.) drilled home a front post header off a corner kick from fellow midfielder Zach Rausch (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.).  The Pioneers then widened their advantage to 2-0 in the 78th minute as midfielder Lucas Martorana (Sr., transfer from Univ. of Buffalo) scored on a penalty kick.  Ashland midfielder Adam Spannbauer knocked in a penalty kick of his own in the 85th minute to cut Malone’s advantage in half but it was not enough as the Pioneers held off the Eagle attack over the final minutes to preserve the 2-1 win.  Malone (1-0-0) took eight shots on goal in the contest while goalkeeper Mike Porter posted four saves.  Ashland (0-2-0), meanwhile, tallied five shots on goal and six saves.
