"They say that there
is really only one way to learn a language: total immersion. From my
experience, I would say that immersion does more than just teach a
language. It teaches culture, perseverance, faith, identity,
open-mindedness, passion, hospitality, appreciation, hard work, prayer,
admiration, friendship, education, family, awareness, and
dreaming. Or, at least, these were things that I learned during
my student teaching in Guatemala. As I became the teacher, I
found that I had just begun to learn. The experience was one of
the most challenging, yet meaningful, experiences of my college career,
perhaps even life." --Kirstin Jenkins, Class of '07

"The student teaching semester in Guatemala was one of the most challenging and rewarding
experiences of my life. My assignment was to teach Spanish in an international
school, but there was so much I felt I still needed to learn! Never before was
I put in a situation where I was expected to perform in a way for which I
didn’t feel adequately prepared. However I accepted the challenge and was
rewarded with growth in confidence and competence—both in my professional and
personal life." --Loren Hughes, Clss of '07
