Smoke On the Mountain Homecoming

The play takes place in the sanctuary of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, located just west of Hickory near the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is Saturday night, October 6, 1945 two months after VJ Day. The war is over, our boys are home, the Depression is a bad memory, and the baby boom has begun.

Mount Pleasant’s principal industries are farming and pickle production. The Mount Pleasant Pickle Plant makes everyone and everything smell of vinegar and dill.

The Sander’s Family first performed at Mount Pleasant on June 15, 1938 after a five year hiatus from the Gospel Circuit. They returned to Mount Pleasant each year until the beginning of the war in 1941. This is their first performance in four years.

The Sander's family has graced the stage of Malone College twice before. They performed in Smoke on the Mountain in November 2001 and A Sander's Family Christmas in December 2003.
