In Tuesday’s home match with Ursuline, freshmen Jen Gahagan (Ravenna Southeast H.S.) and Lori Ickes (Smithville H.S.) paced the Pioneer attack as Gahagan finished the night with 13 kills, 25 digs and three blocks (two solo) while Ickes posted 13 kills with 22 digs and three service aces. Against Grace on Friday, Ickes and Kristen Schoolcraft (So., McKinley H.S.) led a balanced Malone attack as five different Pioneers recorded double-digit kill totals in the match. Beiting followed with 14 kills, a team-high 27 digs and three blocks (one solo), Gann posted 14 kills and four blocks (two solo), and Gahagan tallied 13 kills, three service aces and 22 digs. Other key contributors in the five-game win included Julie Finley (So., Western Reserve H.S.) with 25 digs, Bethany Thompson (Jr., Tuscarawas Central Catholic H.S.) with three service aces and Dibell with 62 assists and three blocks (one solo).
In Saturday’s match with Siena Heights, Ickes and Gahagan again led the way with Ickes posting eight kills, 12 digs and six service aces and Gahagan recording eight kills, 14 digs and three blocks (two solo). Gann added seven kills, Beiting contributed six kills and four service aces, and Dibell recorded 28 assists and 11 digs in the three-game win.
Against Rio Grande in the tournament finale on Saturday, Malone once again had five different players reach double figures in kills. Beiting, Ickes and Gahagan blasted 15 kills apiece with Schoolcraft contributing 12 kills and Gann chipping in with 10 kills. In addition to their impressive kill totals, Ickes scooped up 22 digs, Gahagan posted four service aces, and Schoolcraft tallied a Malone season-high seven blocks (four solo). Finley and Dibell also played major roles in the four-game win as Finley contributed 18 digs and Dibell dished out 61 assists.
In recognition of their outstanding play during the Pioneer Tournament, Gahagan was named to the All-Tournament Team and Ickes was honored with the Tournament MVP award.
This week, Malone will travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (7-0, 0-0 AMC S) on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match with the Cougars before heading to Georgetown, Kentucky over the weekend for the Georgetown College Tiger Invitational.
Football Team Falls 28-21 At Azusa Pacific (CA)
The Malone College football team came up just short on Saturday at Azusa Pacific (CA) University as the squad fell 28-21 in the program’s first contest played in the Pacific Time Zone. Azusa Pacific (1-2) entered the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game clinging to a seven-point lead but was able to preserve the victory with a late, slow-moving drive that chewed up the final seven minutes of the contest. The Pioneers had success moving the ball throughout the game as they racked up 400 total yards of offense (146 rushing, 254 passing) compared with 355 yards (118 rushing, 237 passing) for the Cougars. Malone (1-1) was hampered by three costly turnovers, though, and 12 penalties, totaling 97 yards. Azusa Pacific, meanwhile, was penalized nine times for 80 yards and the Cougars committed just one turnover.
The Pioneers were able to strike quickly as quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh (Jr., Eastland, TX) hit wide receiver Derek Deardorff (Jr., Kenton H.S.) with a 60-yard touchdown pass on the game’s fourth play from scrimmage. Kicker Mike Skvor (Jr., Long Beach, CA) added the extra point to put Malone in front 7-0 just 31 seconds into the contest. Azusa, though, was able to answer back with a 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive on its ensuing possession that was capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rudy Carlton to tight end James Webster. Azusa then pulled ahead moments later as defensive lineman Darrell Tupuola picked off an Orsagh pass attempt and rumbled 27 yards to the endzone, giving his team a 14-7 advantage midway through the first stanza (extra point was good).
The score then remained unchanged until the 6:16 mark of the second quarter as Cougar place kicker Ben Hansen nailed a 28-yard field goal to conclude an 11-play, 67-yard Azusa scoring drive. Malone answered back on its next possession as Orsagh connected with Deardorff once again on a 15-yard touchdown pass that trimmed the Pioneer deficit to three points at 17-14 with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Cougars would then advance the ball all the way to the Malone one-yard line on their ensuing possession but were forced to settle for a 19-yard Hansen field goal as the second quarter clock expired, expanding their lead to 20-14 at halftime.
The Pioneers opened the second half scoring midway through the third quarter as Deardorff hauled in his third touchdown catch of the evening, this one a five-yard pass from quarterback Dominic Liberati (Jr., Union Local H.S.) that put Malone in front 21-20 (Skvor’s extra point was good). Azusa answered back on their ensuing possession, though, retaking the lead on Carlton’s one-yard touchdown plunge at the 3:06 mark of the third quarter. Carlton then found receiver Jordan Farrell in the endzone for a successful two-point conversion to push the Cougar lead back to seven at 28-21. Malone advanced the ball deep into Azusa territory on its next two possessions but was unable to reach the endzone as the first drive ended with a fumble and the second was halted by a sack on fourth down. The Cougars then took possession of the ball with 7:13 remaining in the game and proceeded to methodically drive down the field, converting two fourth downs as they ran out the clock for the 28-21 win.
Orsagh and Liberati once again split time at the quarterback position throughout the evening. Orsagh completed eight of his 15 pass attempts for 166 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while Liberati connected on seven of his 11 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown. Running back Bernard Payton (Sr., Pomona, CA) finished with 109 yards rushing on 25 carries, marking his second consecutive 100-yard game. Deardorff wrapped up his strong performance with five catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Josh Settlemire (Jr., Howland H.S.) pulled in four receptions for 72 yards and tight end LaRoi Johnson (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA) caught three passes for 28 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Dan Hromada (Sr., Padua Franciscan H.S.) paced the squad with 19 tackles (four solo, 0.5 TFL) and one interception. Linebacker Justin Murphy (Sr., Minerva H.S.) followed with 12 tackles (two solo, 1.5 TFL) while defensive back Kenny Williams (So., Bedford H.S.) posted 11 tackles (five solo) with one pass break-up. Defensive lineman Ronell Lee (So., Collinwood H.S.) also contributed 11 tackles (0.5 TFL) on the evening and linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (Sr., Fairport H.S.) tallied eight tackles (two solo, 1.0 TFL). In addition, Malone punter Tyler Parry (Jr., N. Loxahatchee, FL) averaged 30.2 yards per punt on four punts including one inside the 20-yard line.
This week, Malone will host Union (KY) College (0-2) on Saturday (September 15th) at Fawcett Stadium with the kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. This weekend’s contest will mark the first meeting between the two schools.
Women's Soccer Loses To MVNU 2-0, Defeats Taylor 1-0
The Malone College women's soccer team posted a 1-1 record on the week as the squad lost to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University 2-0 on Wednesday but rebounded to earn their first win of the season in a 1-0 shutout at Taylor (IN) University on Saturday. With the 1-1 week, the team is now 1-2-0 overall on the season (0-0-0 AMC North).
At Mt. Vernon Nazarene, the host Cougars scored both of their goals in the first half to take the early lead which ended up being the final tally. MVNU scored just three minutes into the contest on a shot into the upper corner of the goal and then, late in the first half, the Cougars got their second and final goal of the afternoon on a penalty kick to secure the 2-0 win over Malone. Mt. Vernon Nazarene held a 23-4 shots on goal advantage over Malone as Pioneer starting keeper Sam Brown (Jr., Butler, PA), who played the first half, posted four saves while goalie Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA), who played the second half, recorded three saves. The MVNU keeper had one save on the day.
At Taylor, Malone and the host Trojans battled to a 0-0 tie through the first half before Malone's Katie Heckman (Fr., Mars, PA) scored the game winner and only goal of the entire contest off an assist from Ashley Dennerlein (Jr., Baden, PA) to give the Pioneers the 1-0 victory. Malone held a 15-14 edge in shots on goal while Pioneer goal keeper Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA) played the entire game and collected 11 saves to earn the shutout win. The Taylor keeper posted five saves.
This week, Malone (1-2-0, 0-0-0) will host Notre Dame (OH) College (4-0-1, 0-0-0 )on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. and will then finish out the week by hosting Bethany (WV) College (0-4-0) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Men's Soccer Team Wins One Of Three Games On The Week
The Malone College men's soccer team posted one victory in three contests last week as the squad opened the week with a tough 3-2 loss at home on Wednesday to Taylor (IN) University. The Pioneers then lost a 1-0 decision to Hiram College in game one of the John Carroll University Classic on Friday before bouncing back to defeat host John Carroll on Saturday by the same 1-0 score, but this one in double overtime. With the 1-2 week, Malone now stands at 2-2-0 overall on the season (0-0-0 AMC North).
Against Taylor to start the week, the defeat was especially tough in that Malone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the contest. Senior midfielder Pat Quinn (Copley H.S.) commenced the Pioneer scoring just two minutes into the game off an assist by Zach Rausch (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.). Malone got its second goal 28 minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Rausch to grab the 2-0 lead. But the visitors scored a crucial goal with just two minutes left in the first half to cut the deficit to 2-1 and give the Trojans the momentum going into halftime. Taylor then fed off that energy by scoring its second goal 13 minutes into the second half to tie the game and then by nailing the game winner midway through the second half to emerge with the 3-2 victory over the Pioneers. Taylor posted nine shots on goal in the contest while Malone had four. Pioneer goalkeeper Mike Porter (Sr., Highland H.S.) recorded six saves in the effort while the Trojan keeper notched two saves.
Against Hiram, the Pioneers' opponent scored a goal midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead which was all that was needed for Hiram as neither squad scored after that, making the 1-0 score hold up as the final. Malone held a 10-9 shots on goal advantage while Pioneer keeper Mike Porter posted five saves in the game. The Hiram keeper, Nate Rausch, and the brother of Malone's Zach Rausch, recorded three saves.
Against John Carroll, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie at the half and then, after neither team was able to score in the second half, the first 10-minute overtime commenced. Again, neither squad scored in the first OT session to set up a second 10-minute OT period. With just 1:29 left in the second overtime (before the game would have ended in a tie), Malone got the game winner on a goal by Ben Jeremy (Fr., Ontario H.S.) off an assist from Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England). Malone posted 14 shots on goal during the contest while JCU collected 18 shots. Pioneer goalie Mike Porter nine saves in the game while the JCU keeper also had nine.
After placing second in the JCU tournament, Malone placed three players on the All-Tournament Team -- Mike Porter, George Tagaris (Sr., transfer- Univ. of Buffalo) and Ben Jeremy.
This week, Malone (2-2-0, 0-0-0) will travel to Denison University (2-1-0) on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match. The Pioneers will then close out the week by competing in a Kenyon College Classic event -- vs. Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (4-1-0) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and vs. Muskingum College (3-1-0) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
