Three Malone Athletes Earn NCCAA Student Athlete Of The Week Honors

Three Malone College student athletes earned NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Student Athlete of the Week honors for their outstanding play during the week of September 3-9.  Dan Beachy, of the Pioneer football team, Katie Bagley, of the women’s cross country team, and Darren Phipps, of the men’s golf team, each earned the national honor.

Beachy, a senior defensive back from Hartville (Lake H.S.), turned in an outstanding effort in Malone’s first game – against Trinity International (IL) University.  With Malone trailing 14-3 in the second quarter, Beachy picked off a Trojan pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown.  This crucial play swung the game’s momentum back to Malone and helped propel the Pioneers to a come-from-behind 32-27 victory.  In addition to his interception, Beachy also tallied three tackles (two solo, one assist) on the afternoon.

Bagley, a junior from Van Wert (Van Wert H.S.), led the Pioneer women’s cross country team at the Kent State University Short Course Open.  Bagley took first overall in the women’s 3K in a time of 10:29.4.  This non-team scored event featured cross country athletes from NCAA Division I Kent State University and NCAA Division II Ashland University.

Phipps, a senior from Hartville (Lake H.S.), paced the Malone men’s golf team to a second-place finish among eight teams at the Tiffin University Kyle Ryman Memorial last weekend as he finished third overall at the event with a three round score of 216 (72-72-72).
