Pioneers Win Own Fall Invitational; Darren Phipps Takes Medalist HonorsThe Malone College men's golf team captured its own Malone Invitational at the Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance last Friday and Saturday among a 12-team field as the Pioneer A team posted a two-day total of 581 (290-291) to defeat runner-up Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, which tallied a 599 (298-301), by 18 strokes. Indiana Wesleyan University placed third at 600, Marian (IN) College was fourth at 611 and Mt. Union College (A) rounded out the top five at 615. The Malone B team finished ninth at 641 (312-329).
Darren Phipps (Sr., Lake H.S.) paced Malone and took individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 142 (72-70) while Ben Smith (So., Carrollton H.S.) was the tournament runner-up at 143 (71-72). Justin Lower (Fr., Northwest H.S.) was fourth overall at 144 (72-72) and was one of three Pioneers on the five-man All-Tournament Team.
Other Malone A team scores included Quinn Parker (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) at 152 (75-77) and Mark Zimmerman (So., GlenOak H.S.) at 160 (82-78).
The Malone B unit was led by Michael Strayer (So., Riverside H.S.) who carded a 152 (75-77). Other B scores for the Pioneers included Zach Keller (Fr., Wynford H.S.) at 157 (80-77), Kyle Sine (Fr., Shawnee H.S.) at 166 (80-86) and Eric Shepard (Fr., Dixie H.S.). In addition, Ryan Gaughan (Fr., Lake H.S.) completed round one with a score of 77 but was unable to complete round two due to a hand injury.
This week, Malone A will compete in the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
