Pioneers Pull Away For 4-1 Win At Franciscan

The Malone College women’s soccer team tallied three second half goals to pull away for a 4-1 non-conference road victory at Franciscan University on Thursday night.  Forwards Alysia Ramirez (Jr., San Jose, CA) and Aleesha Denmeade (Jr., North Canton Hoover) combined for three quick scores early in the second half to break the game open.  With the win, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 3-4-0 (0-1-0 AMC N) while Franciscan dropped to 2-3-1.

Freshman forward Lauren Armburst (Chippewa H.S.) gave Malone an early 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute of play after scoring on a pass from midfielder Fleur Wynne Morgan (Sr., County Kerry, Ireland).  The Barons quickly responded, though, as Franciscan forward Grace Wigton knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 37th minute.  The match would then remain deadlocked until the 53rd minute as Denmeade scored off an assist from Ramirez to put the Pioneers on top 2-1.  The duo then teamed up twice more over the next few minutes as Denmeade assisted Ramirez on goals in the 55th and 66th minutes to put the match away.

Malone recorded nine shots on goal in the contest compared to eight for Franciscan.  Pioneer goal keepers Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose,CA) and Brettlyn Kelly (So., transfer from Myers University) combined to make seven saves while Baron keeper Nikki Traylor stopped five shots.

Malone will next face American Mideast Conference North Division foe Point Park (Pa.) University (2-3-0, 0-0-0 AMC N) in a 3:00 p.m. match at home this Saturday (9/22).
