Football Tops Olivet Nazarene (IL) 41-21

The Malone College football team exploded for 34 first half points on Saturday afternoon at Fawcett Stadium as the squad ran away with a dominating 41-21 victory over Olivet Nazarene (IL) University.  The Pioneers led 34-0 at halftime and then increased their advantage to 41-0 midway through the third quarter before the Tigers were able to cut into the enormous Malone lead with three late touchdowns.  The Pioneers dominated the first half, racking up 347 yards of total offense over the first two quarters compared to just 97 yards for the visitors.  Malone (3-1) finished the day with 176 yards rushing and 284 yards passing for 460 total yards.  Olivet Nazarene (0-3), meanwhile, compiled 90 yards on the ground and 223 yards through the air for 313 total offensive yards.  The Tigers were hampered by penalties for much of the afternoon as they finished the game with 12 infractions for 79 yards, including a pair of critical first half defensive offside calls that wiped away two Pioneer turnovers.  Malone was penalized eight times in the contest for 70 yards.
Much like the previous three weeks of the season, the Pioneers were able to grab the early lead with a quick scoring strike in the opening minutes of the first quarter.  On Saturday’s third play from scrimmage, quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh (Jr., Eastland, TX) hit wide receiver Derek Deardorff (Jr., Kenton H.S.) on a 79-yard touchdown pass.  Place kicker Mike Skvor (Jr., Long Beach, CA) followed with the extra point to put Malone in front 7-0 just 90 seconds into the contest.  After Olivet’s opening possession fizzled, Skvor capped a 13-play, 86-yard Pioneer scoring drive with a 28-yard field goal that increased Malone’s advantage to 10-0 with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter.  Running back Bernard Payton (Sr., Pomona, CA) then added a pair of touchdown runs early in the second stanza to push the Pioneer lead to 24-0.  Following another three and out on Olivet’s ensuing possession, defensive lineman Ronell Lee (So., Collinwood H.S.) broke through the line and blocked a Tiger punt attempt.  The blocked kick was then batted backwards to the Olivet three-yard line where it was scooped up by linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (Sr., Fairport H.S.) and carried into the endzone to give Malone a 31-0 lead.  The Pioneers then concluded their first half scoring barrage in the final minutes of the second quarter as Skvor increased Malone’s advantage to 34-0 after nailing his second field goal of the game, this one a 35-yard attempt.
A fumbled fair catch attempt by Olivet midway through the third quarter set up the Pioneers’ final score of the game, a nine-yard touchdown run by running back Ted Telemaque (Sr., Long Beach, CA) that increased Malone’s lead to 41-0.  The Tigers were finally able to get on the scoreboard minutes later as quarterback Ryan Forneris concluded an eight-play, 69-yard scoring drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge that trimmed the Pioneer advantage to 41-7.  Olivet would then add two long fourth quarter touchdown passes – a 68-yard strike from Forneris to wide receiver Matt Ostrom and a 43-yard completion from backup quarterback Nick Darland to wide receiver Aaron Swaft – but it was not nearly enough as Malone ran out the clock for the 41-21 win.
Payton had an outstanding day for the Pioneers as he rushed for 97 yards on 16 carries in addition to hauling in five catches for 84 yards and scoring two touchdowns (both rushing).  Orsagh connected on 15 of his 29 pass attempts for 276 yards and one touchdown.  Deardorff snagged five catches for 129 yards with one touchdown, tight end LaRoi Johnson (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA) caught two passes for 22 yards, while fullback Trent Dibell (Sr., Fairless H.S.) pulled in two catches for 13 yards.
Defensively, Lee paced the Malone defense with 10 tackles (four solo, 2.5 TFL, one sack), one forced fumble and the blocked punt.  Defensive back Dan Beachy (Sr., Lake H.S.) followed with seven tackles (five solo) while linebacker Justin Murphy (Sr., Minerva H.S.) also posted seven stops (two solo, 0.5 TFL).
On special teams, Tyler Parry (Jr., North Loxahatchee, FL) punted six times for 209 yards with two kicks downed inside the 20-yard line and defensive back Shaun Paythress (Fr., Euclid H.S.) recovered Olivet’s fumbled fair catch deep in Tiger territory.
This week, Malone (3-1, 0-0 MSFA Mideast) will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday to face new Mid-States Football Association Mideast member Marian College (0-3, 0-0 MSFA Mideast) at 2:00 p.m.  2007 marks the inaugural season for the Knight football program.

Volleyball Wins Three Matches

The Malone College volleyball team tallied three victories last week, beginning with a 30-25, 30-26, 21-30, 30-28 win over NCAA Division II Edinboro (PA) University at Osborne Hall Wednesday night.  The Pioneers then traveled to Amherst, New York on Saturday where they participated in an American Mideast Conference North Division tri-match with Point Park (PA) University and Daemen (NY) College.  Malone opened play on Saturday with a 27-30, 30-27, 31-29, 31-29 victory over Point Park before defeating host Daemen 30-25, 30-21, 30-23 later in the afternoon.  Following the 3-0 week, the Pioneers’ record now stands at 10-9 overall with a 3-0 mark in the AMC North.
In Wednesday’s match with Edinboro, Lori Ickes (Fr., Smithville H.S.) led the way for Malone with 12 kills and 12 digs.  Jen Gahagan (Fr., Ravenna Southeast H.S.) added 11 kills, five blocks and nine digs while Kristen Schoolcraft (So., McKinley H.S.) tallied nine kills and five blocks (one solo).  Also contributing to the non-conference win was Emily Beiting (Fr., Ft.      In Saturday’s finale with Daemen, Gahagan posted a team-high 13 kills and 11 digs.  Gann added eight kills and eight blocks (four solo) while Ickes ripped eight kills.  Dibell also made a major contribution to the three-game win as she compiled 30 assists, seven digs and two service aces.
This week, Malone (10-9, 3-0 AMC N) will face NCAA Division II Tiffin University (3-17) on the road Tuesday night.  The squad will then travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon to participate in another conference tri-match.  The Pioneers will face host Carlow (PA) University (3-9, 0-2 AMC N) at 11:00 a.m. and will play a neutral contest with Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College (6-14, 1-0 AMC N) at 1:00 p.m.

Men’s Soccer Records 2-1 Win Over Point Park

The Malone College men’s soccer team posted a 2-1 victory at home over Point Park (PA) University on Saturday in the squad’s only match of the week.  With the win, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 3-5-0 with a 1-0-0 mark in the American Mideast Conference North Division.
Midfielder Zach Rausch (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) gave Malone an early 1-0 lead in the 24th minute of Saturday’s match after scoring off an assist from midfielder Jose Cal (Mexico City, Mexico).  The score then remained unchanged until the 70th minute as midfielder Inaki Apaolaza (Fr., Mexico City, Mexico) assisted forward Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England) on a goal to increase Malone’s advantage to 2-0.  Point Park made things interesting with a score in the 84th minute of play but the visitors were unable to completely close the gap as they fell by a final score of 2-1.  Point Park managed just three shots on goal in the match while Malone keeper James Kosht (Fr., Ontario H.S.) made two saves to notch the win in his first appearance of the season.  Malone registered 11 shots on goal while Point Park keeper Steve Fabian made nine saves.
This week, Malone (3-5-0, 1-0-0 AMC N) will face Cedarville University (2-5-1, 0-0- AMC S) at home on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to Rochester, New York on Saturday to take on Roberts Wesleyan (4-3-1, 0-0-0 AMC N) College at 2:30 p.m.

Women’s Soccer Tallies 2-1 Record On The Week

The Malone College women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 road loss to NAIA #14 Spring Arbor (MI) University last Monday afternoon.  The squad bounced back, though, to record victories in its two other matches including a 4-1 win at Franciscan University on Thursday afternoon and a 2-0 triumph at home over American Mideast Conference North Division foe Point Park (PA) University on Saturday.  Following the 2-1 week, the Pioneers’ record now stands at 4-4-0 overall with a 1-1-0 mark in AMC North play.
In Monday’s game at Spring Arbor, the host Cougars held a 1-0 advantage at halftime and then added two quick goals midway through the second stanza to pull away for the 3-0 win.  Malone registered seven shots on goal during the match but the squad was unable to get on the scoreboard as Cougar keeper Christina Riske made seven saves for her third shutout of the year.  Spring Arbor tallied 10 shots on goal while Malone goal keepers Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA) and Sam Brown (Jr., Butler, PA) combined to post seven saves.
Against Franciscan on Thursday, Malone tallied three second-half goals to pull away for a 4-1 non-conference road victory.  Forwards Alysia Ramirez (Jr., San Jose, CA) and Aleesha Denmeade (Jr., North Canton Hoover) combined for three quick scores early in the second half to break the game open.  Freshman forward Lauren Armburst (Chippewa H.S.) gave Malone an early 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute of play after scoring on a pass from midfielder Fleur Wynne Morgan (Sr., County Kerry, Ireland).  The Barons quickly responded, though, as Franciscan forward Grace Wigton knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 37th minute.  The match would then remain deadlocked until the 53rd minute as Denmeade scored off an assist from Ramirez to put the Pioneers on top 2-1.  The duo then teamed up twice more over the next few minutes as Denmeade assisted Ramirez on goals in the 55th and 66th minutes to put the match away.  Malone recorded nine shots on goal in the contest compared to eight for Franciscan.  Salazar and Brettlyn Kelly (So., transfer from Myers University) combined to make seven saves while Baron keeper Nikki Traylor stopped five shots.
In Saturday’s home match with Point Park, the contest remained scoreless until the 78th minute of play as Denmeade scored off an assist from Morgan to put Malone in front 1-0.  Ashley Dennerlein (Jr., Baden, PA) then assisted Ramirez on a goal with just over two minutes remaining on the clock to cement the 2-0 conference win.  Malone tallied 15 shots on goal during the contest while Point Park keeper Emily Tomalewski made 13 saves.  Salazar, meanwhile, stopped all 14 shots that she faced to record her second shutout of the season.
This week, Malone (4-4-0, 1-1-0 AMC N) will compete in three matches starting with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Carlow (PA) University (0-6-0, 0-2-0 AMC N) on Tuesday evening.  The squad will then host Kentucky Christian University (1-6-0) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. before traveling to Rochester, New York on Saturday to face Roberts Wesleyan College (3-6-0, 2-1-0 AMC N) at 12:30 p.m.
