Football Pulls Away For 45-28 Win At Marian

The Malone College football team opened Mid-States Football Association Mideast League play on Saturday afternoon with a 45-28 win on the road at Marian (IN) College.  The Pioneers were able to overcome several defensive injuries and a controversial ruling on the game’s opening kickoff to come away with the 17-point victory.  Although Malone (4-1, 1-0 MSFA Mideast) maintained a lead for almost the entire afternoon, Marian (0-4, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) was able to generate several big offensive plays that kept the game close until late in the third quarter.  Malone running back Bernard Payton (Sr., Pomona, CA) then took over the contest, scoring rushing touchdowns of four, three, and 23 yards on three consecutive possessions to put the Pioneers back in control.
Malone had success moving the ball throughout the afternoon as the squad tallied 26 first downs with 143 yards rushing and 278 yards passing for a total of 421 yards of offense.  The Knights, meanwhile, posted 172 yards on the ground and 144 yards through the air for 316 total offensive yards.
The contest got off to an unusual start on the opening kickoff as Marian was credited with a safety after tackling Pioneer defensive back Dennis Thornton (Jr., Shaker Heights H.S.) in the Malone endzone.  Thornton, who was back deep to return the kickoff, had touched the ball on its way into the endzone.  He quickly tried to recover the loose pigskin and bring it up field but the Marian kick-coverage unit tackled him before he could escape from the endzone.  To the surprise of Malone’s coaches and fans, instead of being ruled a touchback (which would have given the Pioneers the ball at the 20-yard line), Marian was awarded with a safety and thus gained an early 2-0 advantage.
Malone was quickly able to overcome this controversial play, though, as quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh (Jr., Eastland, TX) found wide receiver Tyler Davis (Jr., Teays Valley H.S.) for an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Pioneers in front 7-2 at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter.  The Malone lead then stretched to 14-2 minutes later as Orsagh connected with Payton on a 29-yard pass.  The Marian offense was then able to get on the scoreboard early in the second frame when quarterback Eldrin Jones capped a nine-play, 63-yard scoring drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Justin Hall that trimmed the Knights’ deficit to 14-9.
A 47-yard field goal by Pioneer place kicker Mike Skvor (Jr., Long Beach, CA) pushed the visitors’ lead to 17-9 with 4:27 remaining in the second stanza.  Marian running back William Stubbs then concluded the first-half scoring moments later with a 76-yard sprint to the endzone that cut the Malone advantage to 17-15 at halftime (two-point conversion attempt failed).
After the Pioneer defense forced a three-and-out on the Knights’ first possession of the third quarter, the Malone offense took the ball and marched 62 yards to the endzone on 11 plays.  The drive ended with Orsagh’s third TD pass of the game, a four-yard toss to fullback Trent Dibell (Sr., Fairless) that increased the Pioneer lead to 24-15.  Marian would not give up, though, as Stubbs answered back on the Knights’ ensuing possession with a two-yard touchdown plunge that pulled the hosts back to within two points at 24-22 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Payton then took control of the contest as he pushed Malone’s lead to 45-22 early in the fourth stanza after scoring three straight rushing touchdowns.  Marian would make things interesting in the final minutes as Jones connected with Hall on a late touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 45-28 (two-point conversion failed).  The Knights, who are in their inaugural season of football, then forced two Malone fumbles late in the fourth quarter but were unable to close the gap any further, falling by the 45-28 final.
Payton concluded his outstanding afternoon with 33 carries for 138 yards to go with four pass receptions for 65 yards and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving).  Orsagh also had an impressive performance as he completed 24 of 37 passes for 278 yards with three touchdowns and just one interception.  Davis paced the squad in receiving with seven catches for 73 yards and one touchdown while fellow wide receiver Derek Deardorff (Jr., Kenton H.S.) snagged four pass receptions for 51 yards.
Linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (Sr., Fairport H.S.) led the way on defense with a team-high 12 tackles (five solo, one TFL, one sack), two pass break-ups and one interception.  Defensive back Dan Beachy (Sr., Lake H.S.) added nine tackles while defensive lineman Ronell Lee (So., Collinwood H.S.), linebacker Justin Murphy (Sr., Minerva H.S.), and linebacker Jamal Gambrell (Sr., Maple Heights H.S.) each followed with eight tackles apiece.  In addition, defensive lineman Jeff Jeffries (Sr., Dayton, OH) registered six tackles (2.0 TFL), Thornton broke-up three pass attempts while fellow defensive backs Chris Cruise (Sr., Field H.S.) and Eric Hart (Fr., Labrae Local H.S.) each tallied one interception.
On special teams, Tyler Parry (Jr., N. Loxahatchee, FL) punted five times for 159 yards and Skvor made all six of his extra-point attempts in addition to nailing the long first-half field goal try.
This week, Malone (4-1, 1-0 MSFA Mideast) will host Taylor (IN) University (2-3, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) in the annual homecoming game with kickoff slated for 2:00 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium.  The Pioneers hold a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series with the Trojans, including a 28-14 win at Taylor last season.

Women’s Soccer Notches 2-1 Record On The Week

The Malone College women’s soccer team tallied a 2-1 record in three matches last week, beginning with a 2-0 road victory over Carlow (PA) University on Tuesday evening.  The squad then extended its winning streak to four games on Thursday with a dominating 13-0 win at home over Kentucky Christian University before wrapping up the week on Saturday with a 3-0 loss on the road to Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College.  With the 2-1 week, Malone’s record now stands at 6-5-0 overall with a 2-2-0 mark in the American Mideast Conference North Division.
Tuesday’s contest with Carlow remained scoreless until the 54th minute when forward Alysia Ramirez (Jr., San Jose, CA) got Malone on the board with a goal off an assist from midfielder Ashley Dennerlein (Jr., Baden, PA).  The Pioneers’ lead then increased to 2-0 in the final minute of the match after a shot by Malone midfielder Fleur Wynne-Morgan (Sr., County Kerry, Ireland) was deflected into the net by a Carlow defender.  The Pioneers held a commanding 17-1 advantage in total shots on goal over the course of the evening.  Goal keeper Sam Brown (Jr., Butler, PA) posted one save for her first shutout of the season while Celtic keeper Allison Nolan tallied 15 saves.
In Thursday’s match with Kentucky Christian, the Pioneers took command of the contest with four goals in the first half and then added nine scores in the second frame to blow the match open.  Ten different Pioneers found the back of the net in the contest, led by forward Aleesha Denmeade (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) who tallied three goals and three assists.  Dennerlein chipped in with two goals and one assist while Wynne-Morgan and forward Lauren Armbrust (Fr., Chippewa H.S.) each posted one goal and one assist.  Malone keepers Sam Brown, Brettlyn Kelly (So., transfer from Myers University) and Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA) combined to record the Pioneers’ third consecutive shutout (fifth overall).
Against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, the match remained scoreless until early in the second half as the Raiders took control by tallying three quick scores over a 12-minute span en route to the 3-0 win.  The Pioneers posted ten shots on goal in the match but were unable to beat Roberts Wesleyan keeper Rachel Popowych, who notched a 10-save shutout.  The Raiders blasted 18 shots on goal over the course of the afternoon while Salazar and Brown combined to stop 15 shots.
This week, Malone (6-5-0, 2-2-0 AMC N) will compete in just one contest, a 4:00 p.m. match at Ursuline College (3-7-0, 1-1-0 AMC N) on Tuesday afternoon.

Men’s Soccer Suffers Narrow Losses To Cedarville, Roberts Wesleyan

The Malone College men’s soccer team dropped a pair of contests last week by narrow one-goal deficits.  The squad fell 1-0 to Cedarville University at home on Tuesday evening as Yellow Jacket forward Ryan Lustig tallied the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime period.  The Pioneers then traveled to Rochester, New York on Saturday where they lost 2-1 to American Mideast Conference North Division foe Roberts Wesleyan College.  Following the 0-2 week, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 3-7-0 on the season with a 1-1 mark in AMC North play.
After battling back and forth over the first 107 minutes of play in Tuesday’s contest, the two teams appeared to be headed for a scoreless draw before Yellow Jacket forward Ken Davis assisted Lustig on the walk-off goal in the 108th minute of competition.  Cedarville keeper John Norton stopped all six shots that he faced over the course of the match.  Malone goal keeper James Kosht (Fr., Ontario H.S.) also played well, registering seven saves.
In Saturday’s contest with Roberts Wesleyan, the Raiders opened the scoring in the 32nd minute of play as forward Tom Graham drilled a header into the net to give his squad an early 1-0 advantage.  The score then remained unchanged until the 65th minute when Pioneer midfielder Inaki Apaolaza (Mexico City, Mexico) knotted the contest at 1-1 off an assist form midfielder Dean Greenland (London, England).  Roberts Wesleyan answered back just seconds later, though, as forward Ciaran Weissauer scored on a penalty kick to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.  Despite the squad’s best efforts, Malone was unable to find the back of the net over the remaining 25 minutes of play, falling by the 2-1 final.  The Pioneers registered six shots on goal over the course of the afternoon while goal keeper Mike Porter (Sr., Highland H.S.) tallied four saves.  Roberts Wesleyan also posted six shots on goal with five saves.
