The Malone College men’s soccer team dropped a hard-fought contest on the road to Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 2-1. With the narrow American Mideast Conference North Division loss, the Pioneers’ overall record fell to 3-7-0 (1-1-0 AMC N) on the season while Roberts Wesleyan improved to 5-4-1 (1-0-0 AMC N).
The Raiders opened the scoring in the 32nd minute of play in Saturday's match as forward Tom Graham drilled a header into the net to give his squad an early 1-0 advantage. The score then remained unchanged until the 65th minute when Pioneer midfielder Inaki Apaolaza (Mexico City, Mexico) knotted the contest at 1-1 after scoring off an assist form midfielder Dean Greenland (London, England). Roberts Wesleyan answered back just seconds later, though, as forward Ciaran Weissauer scored on a penalty kick to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead. Despite the squad’s best efforts, Malone was unable to find the back of the net over the remaining 25 minutes of play, falling by the 2-1 final. The Pioneers registered six shots on goal over the course of the afternoon while goal keeper Mike Porter (Sr., Highland H.S.) tallied four saves. Roberts Wesleyan also posted six shots on goal with five saves.
This week, Malone (3-7-0, 1-1-0 AMC N) will host a pair of non-conference home matches, starting with a 3:00 p.m. contest with Urbana University (2-6-2, 0-2-0 AMC S) on Wednesday (10/3). Then on Saturday (10/6), the squad will face Geneva (PA) College (7-2-0) at 2:00 p.m.
