Bernard Payton, Ryan Kienzle Named NCCAA Student Athletes Of The WeekTwo Malone College athletes received NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Student Athlete of the Week recognition for their impressive performances during the week of September 24-30. Bernard Payton, of the Pioneer football team, and Ryan Kienzle, of the men’s cross country team, each earned the national honor.
Payton, a senior running back from Pomona, California, led Malone to a 45-28 road victory over Marian (Ind.) College on Saturday afternoon by racking up 203 all-purpose yards (138 rushing, 65 receiving) and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving). He averaged 4.2 yards per carry in the victory, marking his third 100-yard rushing game of the season. Through five games, Payton leads the MSFA (Mid-States Football Association) with 748 all-purpose yards while his 102.2 rushing yards per contest rank third in the 16-team conference.
Kienzle, a senior from Canton, Ohio (GlenOak H.S.), paced Malone to a first-place finish among a 21-team field at the Loyola (Ill.) University Invitational on Saturday (competing primarily against NCAA Division I schools). Kienzle defeated over 230 other runners at the Chicago, Illinois event to capture the individual title in a personal-best time of 24:34. |
