Pioneers Outlast Urbana 3-2The Malone College men’s soccer team picked up a 3-2 non-conference home victory on Wednesday afternoon over Urbana University. Jason Nelson (Sr., Green H.S.) broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the opening minutes of the second half (51st minute) to put the Pioneers in front. This one goal advantage would turn out to be all the scoring that the Malone defense would need as the unit preserved the 3-2 victory by not allowing an Urbana shot on goal over the remaining 39 minutes of competition. The Pioneers’ overall record improves to 4-7-0 (1-1-0 AMC North) with the win while Urbana drops to 2-7-2 (0-2-0 AMC South).
The two teams traded scores back-and-forth in the first half to arrive at the 2-2 tie at intermission. Malone struck first as Zach Rausch (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) scored in the ninth minute of play off a pass from Ross Cochran (So., Paisley, Scotland). Following an Urbana goal in the 27th minute, Rausch struck again, this time on a pass from Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England). Blue Knight forward Jon Snyder then concluded the first half scoring with a goal in the 35th minute. Urbana posted just two shots on goal during the contest (on two first half goals) compared to six shots on goal for the Pioneers.
Malone will next host a homecoming match against Geneva (PA) College (9-2-0) on Saturday (10/6) afternoon at 2:00 p.m. |
