Men's Cross Country Team Captures All-Ohio Title (Ryan Kienzle Takes Championship); Pioneer Women Finish Seventh

The Malone College men's cross country team, ranked #1 in the NAIA, captured the team title among a 39-team field at the Ohio Intercollegiate Championships in Delaware, Ohio last Friday while the women's team, ranked #5 in the NAIA, finished seventh among its 44-team field.  In addition, Ryan Kienzle (Sr., GlenOak H.S.) paced the Pioneer men's team, which finished 1-2-4-12-13, by winning the individual title in a time of 25:13 while Malone head coach Jack Hazen was named the Men's All-Ohio Coach of the Year.  Also, Hazen received the Marv Frye Award, named in honor of the longtime and retired Ohio Wesleyan University coach who was instrumental in organizing the All-Ohio event from the very beginning.  The award is given by the Ohio Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association for meritorious service.  For the men, the victory marked their first overall All-Ohio victory since 1992, when the team captured the last of four consecutive overall championships.  Only Miami University has had more consecutive All-Ohio victories (5 straight from 1965-69) than Malone.
In the men's race, Malone dominated the event by tallying just 32 points to easily outdistance runner-up University of Cincinnati, which had 90 points.  Ohio University was a distant third at 179 points, Ohio Northern University was fourth at 203 and The Ohio State University rounded out the top five at 213.  Other notable teams defeated by Malone included Akron, Kent State, Dayton and Youngstown State.
Following Kienzle's outstanding first-place finish was the second-place overall finish of Nik Schweikert (Jr., Beavercreek H.S.) who posted a time of 25:20.  Next for Malone was freshman Aaron Melhorn (Fairless H.S.) who placed fourth overall in a time of 25:57.  Melhorn was named the Freshman of the Year at the meet for his top time by a freshman athlete.
Others who scored for the team were Chris Sinick (So., Field H.S.) who finished in 12th at 26:32 and Paul Robinson (So., Field H.S.) who was 13th in 26:34.  Also competing for Malone were James Zeuch (Fr., Galion H.S.) who finished 14th (26:36) and Evan Gaynor (So., Delta H.S.) who placed 78th (27:59).
For the women, Malone chalked up 188 points for their seventh-place finish as Miami University won the women's overall title with 75 points.  Ohio University was a close second with 80 points while Akron was third (100), Cincinnati took fourth (103) and Cedarville University placed fifth (121).  The Malone women defeated the likes of Ohio State, Dayton, Kent State, Bowling Green State and Youngstown State.
Leading the way for the Pioneer women was Rebekah Genter (Jr., Crestview H.S.) who finished 12th overall in a time of 19:12.  Kalie Hauenstein (So., Ashland H.S.) was next for the squad as she finished 24th (19:29).  Others who scored for Malone included Katie Bagley (Jr., Van Wert H.S.) in 26th (19:33), Alanna Seamon (Fr., St. Clairsville H.S.) in 50th (20:12) and Kristin Downing (Fr., Lake H.S.) in 76th (20:48).  Gabrielle Wuensch (Fr., New London H.S.) also finished for the varsity in 170th (22:36).
Both teams also had athletes competing in their respective open races at the All-Ohio meet.  For the men's team, Mike Coates (Sr., Sandy Valley H.S.) led the way with a fifth-place finish in 26:32.  Others who competed in the open race for the Malone men were Justin Baum (Sr., Kenston H.S.) in 11th (27:00), Dan McCracken (So., Anna H.S.) in 22nd (27:48), Kyle Randolph (Fr., Galion H.S.) in 29th (27:55), Keith Burns (Jr., Minerva H.S.) in 89th (29:57), Brad Sinick (Sr., Field H.S.) in 112th (30:33), Jon Easterling (Jr., Ashtabula H.S.) in 113th (30:34), Bryan Eckenfels (Fr., Northwestern H.S.) in 129th (31:03), Ian Miller (Sr., Marcus, TX) in 175th (32:28) and Joe Siebert (Jr., Sandy Valley H.S.) in 185th (32:56).
In the women's open race, Sarah Hines (So., Northmor H.S.) finished in 25th (21:27) while Danielle Wuensch (Fr., New London H.S.) was 60th (22:42).
This week, the Malone teams are idle and will next compete at the Southeastern Classic in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, October 20th.

Football Racks Up School-Record 673 Offensive Yards In 33-14 Victory Over Taylor

The Malone College football team put together a record-setting offensive performance in Saturday’s 33-14 homecoming win over visiting Taylor (IN) University.  The NAIA #19 Pioneers piled up 279 yards rushing and 394 yards passing to set a new Malone record in total offensive yardage with 673 yards.  The Pioneer defense also had an outstanding day as the unit limited Taylor (2-4, 0-2 MSFA Mideast) to 135 yards rushing and just 14 yards passing for a total of 149 offensive yards.  Malone tallied 31 first downs in the contest compared to just three first downs for the Trojans and held an almost 12-minute advantage in total time of possession (the Pioneers controlled the ball for 35:57, Taylor 24:03).
The win extends Malone’s current winning streak to four games and improves the Pioneers’ overall record to 5-1 (2-0 MSFA Mideast), marking the best start for the program since 1996 when the squad opened the season with an 8-1 record.  Saturday’s victory also marks Malone’s sixth straight home win and seventh consecutive victory at Fawcett Stadium (the Pioneers were considered the road team in last year’s 20-10 triumph over Walsh University).  In addition, since the start of the 2006 season, Malone has notched a 7-1 home record under the direction of head coach Mike Gardner (only home loss was to Azusa Pacific last season).  Also, Saturday's victory puts the Pioneer football program's all-time record back at the .500 level (74-74-2) for the first time since the last week in October of 2003.
The Pioneers set the tone for a big offensive outburst early on in Saturday’s contest as quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh (Jr., Eastland, TX) hit wide receiver Derek Deardorff (Jr., Kenton H.S.) for a 77-yard touchdown strike on the squad’s third play from scrimmage.  Place kicker Mike Skvor (Jr., Long Beach, CA) then capped the Pioneers’ second possession of the game with a 25-yard field goal to put Malone in front 9-0 at the 3:35 mark of the first quarter (Skvor’s extra point attempt following the opening touchdown was off the mark).  Taylor then got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter as quarterback Brandon Hurst turned on the afterburners and jetted 71 yards to the endzone to pull the Trojans to within two points at 9-7.  Malone answered back quickly on its next possession, though, as Orsagh and Deardorff connected again, this time on a 21-yard TD pass that increased the Pioneers’ lead to 16-7.  Malone then added two more second-quarter scores, an 11-yard touchdown run by running back Ted Telemaque (Sr., Long Beach, CA) and a 20-yard Skvor field goal, to take a commanding 26-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The score would then remain unchanged until early in the fourth quarter when Trojan defensive lineman Cameron Heasley scooped up a Telemaque fumble and rumbled 16 yards to the endzone to cut the Taylor deficit to 26-14.  However, the visitors were unable to get any closer over the remainder of the game as Pioneer running back Bernard Payton (Sr., Pomona, CA) concluded the afternoon’s scoring with a six-yard touchdown run to cement the 33-14 win.
Despite missing the entire third quarter due to dehydration, Payton still put up big numbers, registering four pass receptions for 52 yards and 20 rushing attempts for 142 yards (7.1 average) with one touchdown.  Telemaque also had success running the ball as he gained 115 yards on 17 carries (6.8 average) with one touchdown.  Prior to Saturday’s contest, the last time Malone had two different players rush for 100 or more yards in a game was November 11th, 2002 when quarterback Eric Rector (124 yards) and running back Joel Peterson (106 yards) each surpassed the 100-yard mark in a 33-27 road loss to the University of Saint Francis (IN).
Orsagh had an outstanding day under center as he completed 27 of 35 pass attempts for 380 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Deardorff hauled in nine catches for 162 yards and two TD’s, fellow wide receiver Josh Settlemire (Jr., Howland H.S.)  caught five balls for 66 yards, and tight end LaRoi Johnson (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA) snagged five pass receptions for 61 yards.
Defensive lineman Ronell Lee (So., Collinwood H.S.) led the way on defense with a game-high 11 tackles (four solo, 2.5 TFL, one sack) followed by linebacker Dan Hromada (Sr., Padua Franciscan H.S.) who returned from injury to record 10 tackles (two solo, 1.5 TFL).  Defensive lineman Jeff Jeffries (Sr., Dayton, OH) added five tackles (two solo, 1.5 TFL, one sack), linebacker Kevin Kapostasy (Sr., Fairport H.S.) posted five tackles (two solo), and defensive back Eric Hart (Fr., Labrae Local H.S.) pulled down an interception for the second straight week.
On special teams, Tyler Parry (Jr., North Loxahatchee, FL) punted four times for 168 yards with a long of 52 and one kick downed inside the 20-yard line.  In addition, wide receiver Tyler Davis (Jr., Teays Valley H.S.) returned three kickoffs for 53 yards.
This week, #19 Malone (5-1, 2-0 MSFA Mideast) will host local rival #15 Walsh University (3-3, 0-2 MSFA Mideast) on Saturday at Fawcett Stadium with the kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m.  New NAIA national rankings will be out later today (Monday).  Walsh holds an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools, although Malone ended the Cavaliers’ seven-year winning streak in the annual rivalry game last season with a 20-10 road victory.  In addition, the winner of the contest will be awarded the annual rotating Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late former Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club.

Men’s Soccer Tallies One-Goal Victories Over Urbana, Geneva

The Malone College men’s soccer team picked up a pair of one-goal wins at home last week, beginning with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon over visiting Urbana University.  Then on Saturday, the Pioneers stretched their win streak to two games after defeating Geneva (PA) College by a final score of 1-0.  Following the 2-0-0 week, Malone’s overall record improved to 5-7-0 while the squad’s American Mideast Conference North Division mark remained at 1-1-0.
In Wednesday’s contest with Urbana, Jason Nelson (Sr., Green H.S.) broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the opening minutes of the second half (51st minute) to put the Pioneers in front.  This one-goal advantage would turn out to be all the scoring that the Malone defense would need as the unit preserved the 3-2 victory by not allowing an Urbana shot on goal over the remaining 39 minutes of competition.  The two teams had traded scores back-and-forth in the first half to arrive at the 2-2 tie at intermission.  Malone struck first as Zach Rausch (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) scored in the ninth minute of play off a pass from Ross Cochran (So., Paisley, Scotland).  Following an Urbana goal in the 27th minute, Rausch struck again, this time on a pass from Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England).  Blue Knight forward Jon Snyder then concluded the first-half scoring with a goal in the 35th minute.  Urbana posted just two shots on goal during the contest (on two first-half goals) compared to six shots on goal for the Pioneers.
Against Geneva on Saturday, both teams were held without a shot on goal during the first half of play.  The Pioneers were able to get the offense going in the second stanza, though, as Batchelor drilled home the contest’s first and only goal on a pass from Rausch in the 57th minute of play.  Malone registered two shots on goal in the match while Geneva goal keeper Sam McCracken posted one save.  Pioneer goal keeper Mike Porter (Sr., Highland H.S.) stopped the only Golden Tornado shot that he faced to record his second shutout of the season.
This week, Malone (5-7-0, 1-1-0 AMC N) will travel to Shawnee State University (5-6-1, 1-2-0 AMC S) on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. contest with the Bears.  The squad will then host AMC North Division foe Houghton (NY) College (5-2-3, 1-1-0) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Women’s Soccer Holds On For 3-2 Win At Ursuline

The Malone College women’s soccer team posted a 3-2 victory at Ursuline College on Tuesday in the squad’s only contest of the week.  The Pioneers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before withstanding a late Arrow rally to notch the American Mideast Conference North Division victory.
Pioneer midfielder Fleur Wynne-Morgan (Sr., County Kerry, Ireland) gave Malone a commanding 3-0 advantage in the 31st minute after scoring off an assist from forward Lauren Armbrust (Fr., Chippewa H.S.).  Ursuline answered back just over two minutes later, though, as forward Jaimie Grindle got the Arrows on the scoreboard with a goal in the 33rd minute.  Ursuline forward Kristen Hayes was then able to cut the deficit to 3-2 with a score midway through the second period but the Arrows were unable to close the gap any further as Pioneer goalkeeper Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA) shut out the hosts’ attack over the final 25 minutes of regulation to preserve the 3-2 win.  With the one-goal victory, Malone improved to 7-5-0 (3-2-0 AMC N) on the season while Ursuline dropped to 3-8-0 (1-2-0 AMC N).
Pioneer forward Aleesha Denmeade (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) accounted for Malone’s first two goals of the afternoon as she scored on a pass from Morgan in the ninth minute and then knocked in a corner kick rebound in the 15th. The Pioneers registered 12 shots on goal during the contest while Arrow keeper Keri Wolf made nine saves.  Salazar and fellow keeper Sam Brown (Jr., Butler, PA) combined to stop 12 of Ursuline’s 14 shots on goal.
This week, Malone (7-5-0, 3-2-0 AMC N) will host a 4:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday against local rival Walsh University (10-3-2, 1-2-1 AMC S).  The squad will then face NAIA #25 Houghton (NY) College (7-2-2, 4-0-0 AMC N) in a 1:00 p.m. AMC North match on Saturday.

Thomas, KY) tallied nine kills and 17 digs.  Dibell added 39 assists while Kristi Beun scooped up a season-high 23 digs in the narrow 3-2 defeat.
This week, Malone (11-13, 4-2 AMC North) will host a tri-match on Thursday afternoon with Concordia (MI) University (15-16, 3-4 WHAC) and West Virginia University Institute of Technology (1-18, 0-8 Mid-South).  The Pioneers will open competition with a 4:00 p.m. match against Concordia.  West Virginia Tech and Concordia will then play a neutral contest at 6:00 p.m. followed by Malone vs. West Virginia Tech at 8:00 p.m.

Women's Golf Places Third At ODU Invitational

The Malone College women's golf team finished third among an eight-team field at the Ohio Dominican University Invitational last Friday and Saturday as the Pioneers tallied a two-day score of 700 (348-352).  Bethel (IN) College won the event at 619 (315-304) while Wittenberg University was second at 697, just three strokes ahead of Malone.  ODU took fourth at 704 and Walsh University rounded out the top five at 722.
Elena Duncan (So., Winona Lake, IN) paced the team with a score of 172 (88-84) with the 84 being a career low for her.  Jen Blocker (So., Westerville H.S.) followed with a 173 (87-86) while Heather Hall (Sr., Bellefontaine H.S.) also posted a career low of 83 in the first of her two rounds that gave her a 175 total (83-92).  Other scores for Malone included Jennifer Snyder (Fr., Wexford, PA) at 180 (90-90), Alyssa Westfall (Fr., Ashland H.S.) at 196 (100-96), Laurie Grubb (So., Lake H.S.) at 201 (108-93) and Carinna Baldner (Jr., Hillsdale H.S.) at 205 (95-110).
