The Malone College volleyball team competed in a total of four matches over the weekend at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York as part of the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) East Region Tournament.  The Pioneers opened play on Friday with a 30-26, 30-24, 24-30, 31-29 victory over the host Raiders before falling later in the evening to eventual NCCAA East Region Champion Mount Vernon Nazarene University by the final scores of 30-32, 25-30, 21-30.  On Saturday the Pioneers picked up a pair of victories, winning 30-13, 30-15, 30-23 over Carlow (PA) University and 30-21, 30-32, 30-16, 25-30, 15-10 over NCAA Division II Geneva (PA) College.  Following the 3-1 weekend, Malone’s overall record climbed back above the .500 mark and now stands at 16-15 (6-3 AMC North) on the year.

In Friday’s American Mideast Conference North Division match with Roberts Wesleyan, Lori Ickes (Fr., Smithville H.S.) and Jen Gahagan (Fr., Ravenna Southeast H.S.) led the way for the Pioneers as each player tallied 14 kills and 10 digs.  Kristen Schoolcraft (So., McKinley H.S.) added 12 kills and two blocks (one solo), Emily Beiting (Fr., Fort Thomas, KY) posted nine kills and 16 digs, and Alyssa Dibell (So., Fairless H.S.) dished out 46 assists in the four-game triumph.

Against NAIA #17 Mount Vernon Nazarene, Gahagan paced the squad with nine kills and 15 digs.  Erica Gann (So., Meadowbrook H.S.) followed with eight kills while Ickes registered seven kills.  Schoolcraft notched a season-high eight blocks (four solo) and Dibell tallied 29 assists, but it was not enough as the Cougars pulled out the three-game win.  MVNU posted a 4-0 record at the tournament and thus secured the East Region Title and an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament.

In Saturday’s opener with AMC North Division foe Carlow, Schoolcraft compiled seven kills and eight blocks (five solo).  Gann added four kills and Ickes served up a Malone season-high seven aces in the quick three-game victory.

Against Geneva in the weekend’s finale, Gahagan crushed a season-high 19 kills to go with 10 digs, five blocks, and three service aces.  Schoolcraft followed with 14 kills and six blocks while Ickes notched 12 kills and 21 digs.  Other important contributors in the five-game win included Gann with 12 kills, Dibell with 48 assists and Kristi Beun (Jr., Kidron Central Christion H.S.) with 19 digs.

This week, Malone (16-15, 6-3 AMC N) will face Notre Dame (OH) College (16-11, 8-1 AMC N) in a home conference match on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.  The squad will then host a tri-match on Saturday with Mount Vernon Nazarene University (30-1, 8-0 AMC S) and Houghton (NY) College (10-18, 2-8 AMC N).  The Pioneers will face the 17th ranked Cougars at noon on Saturday followed by a neutral contest at 2:00 p.m. between Mount Vernon Nazarene and Houghton.  The squad will then wrap up the day with a match against the Highlanders at 4:00 p.m.
