Women’s Soccer Posts 2-1 Record On The Week
The Malone College women’s soccer team tallied a 2-1 record in three matches last week, beginning with a 2-0 win at home on Monday afternoon over visiting Indiana Institute of Technology. The squad then posted a 2-1 victory at NCAA Division III Lake Erie College on Wednesday before falling 3-1 on the road to American Mideast Conference North Division opponent Daemen (NY) College. Following the 2-1 week, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 9-8-0 on the season with a 3-4-0 mark in the AMC North.
Malone grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a goal midway through the first half of Monday’s contest with Indiana Tech. The squad was then able to maintain this one-goal advantage until the final minutes of the contest when they added a second score to cement the 2-0 non-conference victory. Forward Aleesha Denmeade (Jr., North Canton Hoover H.S.) got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the 26th minute as she scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season off a pass from fellow forward Alysia Ramirez (Jr., San Jose, CA). Defender Julie Wade (Sr., Clear Fork H.S.) then assisted Ramirez on the clinching score with just 62 seconds remaining on the clock. Malone held a 9-3 advantage in total shots on goal during the match. Indiana Tech goalkeeper Jennifer Sanow made seven saves while Pioneer keeper Merisa Salazar (Jr., San Jose, CA) stopped all three Warrior shot attempts that she faced to record her third shutout of the season.
In Wednesday’s contest at Lake Erie College, both teams wasted very little time in getting their respective offenses going as the Pioneers and the Storm each posted goals within the first three minutes of play. The match then remained tied at 1-1 until the 31st minute when Malone pulled ahead for good after scoring off a corner kick. The Pioneers’ defense was then able to shut down the Lake Erie attack over the remaining 59 minutes of the contest to preserve the 2-1 win. Ashley Dennerlein (Jr., Baden, PA) scored off a pass from Ramirez to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 advantage. Angela Bethel answered back for Lake Erie just 62 seconds later, though, knotting the score at 1-1. Pioneer midfielder Fleur Wynne-Morgan (Sr., County Kerry, Ireland) then headed in the deciding goal off a Dennerlein corner kick with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Malone notched eight shots on goal over the course of the match while Salazar posted two saves. The Storm tallied three shots on goal and six saves.
Against Daemen on Saturday, the Wildcats took command of the contest by tallying three quick goals within the first 21 minutes of the match. Malone was able to avoid the shutout when Denmeade scored off a pass from Vanessa Schmidt (Fr., Lake H.S.) in the final minute of the second half but it was not enough as the hosts held on for the 3-1 win. Malone notched seven shots on goal over the course of the afternoon while Salazar tallied six saves. Daemen, meanwhile, recorded nine shots on goal and six saves.
This week, Malone (9-8-0, 3-4-0 AMC N) will not compete as its regular season has concluded. While Malone will not qualify for AMC postseason competition, the team could possibly compete in the NCCAA East Regionals.

Against Daemen on Saturday afternoon, Jason Nelson (Sr., Green H.S.) knocked home the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining in the second and final overtime period. The Wildcats then maintained this slim lead until midway through the second half when Marcos Batchelor (So., London, England) tallied his fifth goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. The match then appeared to be headed for a tie until Nelson found the back of the net in the 107th minute (three minutes left in the second and final 10-minute overtime period) to give Malone the thrilling 2-1 victory.
