Shane Humphrey, Kellyn Murphy Receive NCCAA Student Athlete of the Week Honors

Two Malone College athletes recently garnered NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Student Athlete of the Week recognition following their impressive performances during the week of December 31st-January 6th.  Shane Humphrey, of the men’s basketball team, and Kellyn Murphy, of the women’s basketball team, each earned the national award.

Humphrey, a senior center from McZena, Ohio (Loudonville H.S.), averaged 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game to help the Pioneers post a 2-0 record last week at Embry-Riddle (FL) University’s Bahama House Shootout.  The 6’5” senior tallied 13 points and six boards in a 57-55 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan College on Tuesday evening.  He then posted 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals in the Pioneers’ 86-83 upset victory against NAIA Division II #4 and previously undefeated Embry-Riddle in the tournament’s championship game on Wednesday.  Humphrey shot 72.2% (13-18) from the field on the week, knocked down eight of nine (88.9%) free throws and was named the shootout’s Most Valuable Player.  With the pair of victories, the Malone men’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to seven games and improved its overall record to 12-4 on the season.

Murphy, a senior guard from Hartville, Ohio (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.), led the Pioneers to an 88-80 win over Ursuline College on Thursday evening in Malone’s only contest of the week.  The 5’8” senior poured in a career-high 29 points with five rebounds, four steals, and three assists.  She knocked down 10 of her 15 shots from the field, made her only three-point attempt and connected on eight of nine free throws.  With the American Mideast Conference North Division victory, Malone’s overall record improved to 3-10 on the season with a 1-0 mark in the AMC North.

Both the men’s and women’s squads return to action on Saturday with a home double-header against Daemen (NY) College.  The women’s game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s contest to follow at 7:30 p.m.
