Men’s Basketball Hangs On For 77-73 Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

In its only contest of the week, the Malone College men’s basketball team cemented a 77-73 win over visiting Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College on Saturday evening by sinking all 10 of its free throws in the final 90 seconds of the game.  The Pioneers led the tightly-contested match-up 33-31 at halftime before the Raiders jumped out to their largest lead of the night at 52-45 midway through the second half.  Malone fought back, though, to take a 58-57 advantage with just over six minutes remaining on the clock and then held off a late Raider surge with its clutch performance from the charity stripe.  The 77-73 triumph gave the Pioneers their first American Mideast Conference North Division victory of the season and improved the squad’s overall record to 13-5 on the year (1-1 AMC North).  Roberts Wesleyan fell to 5-13 overall (0-2 AMC North) following the narrow defeat.
Malone made nearly 46% (22-48) of its overall shots from the field in Saturday’s game and connected on 29 of its 38 (76.3%) free throws.  The Raiders, meanwhile, hit 25 of their 68 (36.8%) overall field goal attempts, including 13 of 36 (36.1%) shots from three-point range.  Roberts Wesleyan committed only seven turnovers but struggled at the free-throw line, converting on just over 50% (10-19) of its attempts.
Junior forward Jarrod Ferwerda (Lake H.S.) paced four Pioneers in double figures with a season-high 18 points.  Senior guard Ben Carver (Shelby H.S.) followed with 16 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.  Senior center Shane Humphrey (Loudonville H.S.) added 16 points and five rebounds while senior forward Tyler Renner (Garaway H.S.) posted his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards.
Special Note: The newest class of Malone College Athletics Hall of Fame inductees – Dale Baker ('78, wrestling), Mark Bankert (administrator), Heidi (Bennett) Yokom ('96, softball), Jason Carver ('96, basketball), Dan DeGeorge ('97, football) and Rob Roberts ('96, baseball) – were recognized at halftime of this men's contest.

Women’s Basketball Tops Carlow On The Road Before Falling To Roberts Wesleyan At Home

The Malone College women’s basketball team split a pair of American Mideast Conference North Division games last week.  The squad opened play on Tuesday evening with a hard-fought 67-61 road win at Carlow (PA) University before suffering a 66-58 defeat at home to Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College on Saturday night.  Following the 1-1 week in conference play, the Pioneers overall record now stands at 4-12 on the year with a 2-2 mark in the AMC North Division.
Tuesday’s game at Carlow remained close throughout the first 35 minutes as neither team led by more than seven points until late in the second half.  The Pioneers then began to pull away before being forced to hold off a late charge by the host Celtics.  Senior guard Heather Fenner (Shelby H.S.) gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the night at 59-50 after knocking down a three-pointer with just under three minutes remaining. The Celtics quickly fought back into the game, though, with a 7-0 run over the next 90 seconds that trimmed Malone’s advantage to just two at 59-57.  Each team then connected on two pairs of free throws over its next two possessions, leaving the Pioneers with the ball and a 63-61 lead with just over 30 ticks showing on the game clock.
Carlow proceeded to quickly foul and freshman point guard Allyson Wilson (Firestone H.S.) stepped to the line and hit one of her two free throw attempts to push Malone’s advantage to three points at 64-61.  The Celtics fired up a three-pointer on their next trip down the floor but the game-tying attempt was off the mark.  Senior guard Kellyn Murphy (St. Vincent-St. Mary) grabbed the important rebound and the Pioneers then hit three of four free throws in the final moments to secure the 67-61 triumph.  Each team struggled somewhat to get its shots to fall as the Pioneers connected on 21 of 62 attempts (33.9%) on the night while Carlow hit 21 of its 65 (32.3%) overall shots from the field.  Malone did hold a 49-37 advantage in total rebounds, however, and snagged a season-high 13 steals.  Murphy led the Pioneers with a game-high 20 points (7-15 FG, 0-2 3PT FG, 6-9 FT) in addition to pulling down seven boards and swiping four steals.  Fenner and sophomore guard Amanda Bryan (Carrollton H.S.) each tossed in nine points while junior forward Tara Miller (Miami East H.S.) contributed seven points and 11 rebounds.
Against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, the Pioneers trailed 34-23 at halftime but then fought back to tie the contest at 43-43 with eight and a half minutes remaining in the game.  Malone was unable to take the lead, though, and Roberts Wesleyan quickly responded with an 11-5 run over the next five minutes that pushed the visitors’ advantage to six points at 54-48.  The Pioneers refused to surrender, twice cutting the deficit to two points in the final three minutes of the contest before Roberts Wesleyan was able to secure the 66-58 victory by knocking down six of its final seven free throws.
The Pioneers connected on 15 of their 19 (78.9%) free throw attempts in the game but struggled somewhat from the field, hitting only 20 of their 57 (35.1%) overall shots.  The Raiders, meanwhile, sank 17 of their 23 (73.9%) free throws and converted on 24 of their 62 (38.7%) field goal attempts.  Malone held a commanding 46-33 advantage in total rebounds but also committed 24 turnovers and made just 20% (3 of 15) of its attempts from beyond the three-point arc.  Murphy paced the Pioneers with 18 points in addition to pulling down five boards and dishing out three assists.  Miller followed with 13 points and an impressive career-high 21 rebounds, 14 of which came in the second half.  Freshman guard Ashley Speicher (Plymouth H.S.) came off the bench to post nine points while junior forward Nicole Feher (Lutheran West H.S.) contributed six points and six rebounds.
This week, Malone (4-12 overall, 2-2 AMC North) will travel to Point Park (PA) University (2-15 overall, 0-4 AMC North) on Tuesday evening for a 5:30 p.m. contest.  The Pioneers will then head to Houghton (NY) College (7-8 overall, 0-3 AMC North) on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. game with the Highlanders.
This week’s opponents: Point Park- Malone holds a 12-3 advantage in the all-time series with Point Park and has won each of the last seven meetings between the two schools.  The squads last played on November 4, 2006 at Osborne Hall as Malone notched a convincing 82-47 season-opening win.  Houghton- The Pioneers lead the all-time series 4-2 and have posted four straight victories over the Highlanders.  Malone tallied a 93-69 win in the most recent meeting between the two schools, a neutral contest played at Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College on November 11, 2006.
Pioneer Notes: Kellyn Murphy paces the squad in scoring at 15.4 points per game followed by Tara Miller at 9.2 and Allyson Wilson at 6.8…Miller leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 boards per contest followed by Nicole Feher at 6.4 and Murphy at 5.5…Murphy is also averaging a team-high 1.9 assists per outing…Miller’s 21-rebound performance in Saturday’s game with Roberts Wesleyan was just two boards shy of tying the Malone individual-game rebound record of 23 which was set by Pam Oswald against Kenyon College on November 19, 1994...With 18 points on Saturday, Murphy moved into the Top 20 on the Pioneers’ all-time scoring list and is now tied for 20th with 895 career points.
