Pioneers Use Late Rally To Record 64-62 Victory At Point Park (PA)

The Malone College women’s basketball team tallied a 64-62 win at Point Park (PA) University on Tuesday evening after overcoming a 10-point deficit in the final five minutes of the contest.  Malone trailed 56-46 with about four and half minutes left in the game but then outscored Point Park 18-6 over the remainder of regulation to post the two-point American Mideast Conference North Division triumph.  A lay-up by junior forward Tara Miller (Miami East H.S.) tied the game at 62-62 in the final minute and Point Park then turned the ball over on its ensuing trip down the floor.  Freshman guard Allyson Wilson (Firestone H.S.) was fouled on Malone’s next possession and quickly gave her squad the lead after nailing two clutch free throws.  The hosts quickly took the ball down the court and launched a go-ahead three-point attempt in the final moments, but the shot was off the mark, allowing Malone to escape with the thrilling 64-62 come-from-behind victory.

The win, Malone’s third straight on the road, improved the squad’s overall record to 5-12 (3-2 AMC North) on the season.  Point Park, meanwhile, remained winless in conference play as its record dropped to 2-16 overall (0-5 AMC North) following the tough loss.

Malone held a 29-23 lead at halftime before a 13-4 Point Park run put the hosts on top 42-33 midway through the second half.  Point Park then maintained a sizable advantage until Malone launched its comeback in the final minutes.  Malone made just 33.3% (22-66) of its shots from the field, including only two of nine (22.2%) tries from beyond the three-point arc.  Point Park fared a little better, connecting on 28 of its 72 (38.9%) overall shots from the field, including over 40% (5-12) of its three-pointers.  Malone trailed 48-50 in total rebounds, but attempted 28 free throws on the evening compared to just two attempts for Point Park (Malone made 18 of those 28 (64.3%) free throws while Point Park split its two attempts).

Wilson and senior guard Kellyn Murphy (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) each scored 15 points to pace Malone.  Wilson also posted six rebounds, two steals, and two assists in the victory and made all six of her free throw attempts during her team’s late scoring run.  Murphy notched five of her points in the final minutes while also contributing nine rebounds, thee assists, and three steals on the evening.  Junior forward Nicole Feher (Lutheran West H.S.) added 10 points and six rebounds and Miller finished the night with nine points and 17 boards.  Miller has now notched double-digit rebound totals in each of the last three games (11, 21, and 17 rebounds).

Malone (5-12 overall, 3-2 AMC North) will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Houghton (NY) College (7-9 overall, 0-4 AMC North) for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
