Malone Downs Point Park (PA) 99-87The Malone College men’s basketball team registered its sixth consecutive road victory of the year on Tuesday night with a 99-87 win over fellow American Mideast Conference North Division member Point Park (PA) University. Malone shot nearly 60% (16-27) from the field in the opening stanza to build a 52-46 halftime lead. Point Park twice trimmed to deficit to five points in the opening minutes of the second half, but the hosts got no closer over the remainder of the contest as Malone stretched its lead to as many as 14 points in the final frame as it pulled away for the 99-87 victory. Malone improves to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in the AMC North Division with the win while Point Park falls to 11-9 overall and 1-2 in the division.
Malone made 53.4% (31-58) of its overall field goal attempts, including eight of 16 (50%) tries from three-point range. The visitors also held a 42-32 advantage in total rebounds and made 29 of their 39 (74.4%) free throws. Point Park drained 32 of 75 (42.7%) shots from the field, including 12 of 27 (44.4%) three-pointers, but the hosts attempted only 12 free throws compared to Malone’s 39 (Point Park made 11 of those 12 (91.7%) shots from the charity stripe).
Senior guard Ben Carver (Shelby H.S.) led a balanced Malone offensive attack with 20 points (4-7 FG, 1-1 3PT FG, 11-11 FT) and three assists. Junior forward Jarrod Ferwerda (Lake H.S.) followed with 19 points. Senior forward Tyler Renner (Garaway H.S.) recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks for his sixth double-double of the season while senior center Shane Humphrey (Loudonville H.S.) notched 15 points and six boards.
Malone (14-5 overall, 2-1 AMC North) has won nine out of its last ten contests overall and will look to extend its road winning streak to seven games on Saturday when the squad travels to Houghton (NY) College (6-10 overall, 0-3 AMC North) for a 4:00 p.m. match-up with the Highlanders.
Pioneer Notes: With 18 points in Tuesday’s game, Renner moved into 12th place on Malone’s all-time scoring list with 1556 career points….Following his 20-point performance against Point Park, Carver also moved up on the scoring list, joining the Top 40 (now ranks 38th) with 1119 career points…Carver also recently reached the Top 50 on Malone’s all-time rebounding list and currently ranks 50th with 352 career boards. |
