Men's Golf Off To Great StartBoth the Malone College men’s and women’s golf teams started the 2007-08 season off with successful fall campaigns. Led by head coach Ken Hyland, the men’s golf team experienced strong finishes in most of their tournaments despite the young talent that they have brought in this year. Max Baker, the fifth-year head coach for the women’s squad, led the team to a very promising start to the year with two victories and two third-place finishes. Both teams will be looking forward to the spring seasons in hopes of earning a berth to the NAIA National Championships.
The Pioneer men’s golf team opened the fall season in Tiffin, Ohio for the Kyle Ryman Memorial tournament. Malone finished second among a nine-team field as senior Darren Phipps (Lake H.S.) led the Pioneers with an even-par 216 (72-72-72) to finish in third place overall.
Malone hosted its own Fall Invitational at Tannenhauf Golf Course the following weekend and won the event among a 12-team field with a two-day score of 581(291-290). Again, Malone was paced by Phipps who was the individual medalist, shooting a score of 142 (72-70).
The squad next competed at the Eastern Kentucky University Colonial Classic and took the runner-up spot among nine mostly NCAA Div. I teams with a score of 871(288-290-293). Malone was again paced by Phipps who carded a total of 208 (73-68-67) to finish fourth overall. His score tied Malone’s three-round scoring record set by Josh Anderson who shot 208 at the 2001 NAIA Regional IX Tournament.
At the Red Poling Collegiate Classic, hosted by Spring Arbor (MI) University, Malone fired a one-day total of 308 to finish runner-up to Hope (MI) College. Freshman Justin Lower (Northwest H.S.) paced the team with a 75 to finish fourth overall.
Malone then traveled to Panama City, Florida to compete in the NCCAA National Championships October 8-9. The Pioneers shot a two-round total of 611 (305-306) to finish seventh overall among 18 teams as Lower fired a two-day score of 145 (75-70) and finished fifth overall to earn NCCAA All-America honors.
Capping off the fall season, Malone played locally in the Phipps Memorial Tournament at the Brookside Country Club. The team finished the season with a victory over the three-team field by posting a score of 309. Three Malone athletes tied for the top score of the day with rounds of 76 but it was Quinn Parker (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) who officially took medalist honors at the event by winning a playoff on the second hole. Lower and Ben Smith (So., Carrollton H.S.) also posted rounds of 76.
The Malone women’s golf team began its fall season at the Urbana University Invitational on September 24th and shot a one-day total of 387 to finish third overall among a seven-team field. The team was paced by sophomore Elena Duncan (Winona Lake, IN) who shot an 87 to finish one stroke behind the individual winner.
Next, Malone played in the Walsh University Invitational and notched a one-day score of 371 to come in first among four teams. The Pioneers finished twelve shots ahead of their nearest competition. Jennifer Blocker (So., Westerville H.S.) tied for second overall and led the way for Malone with a round of 89 while Jennifer Snyder (Fr., Wexford, PA) was right behind in fourth at 90. Both Blocker and Snyder were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
Malone next participated in the Ohio Dominican University Kisor Classic, claiming a third-place finish among a strong eight-team field. The Pioneers tallied a two-day total of 700 (348-352) as Duncan paced the team with a score of 172 (88-84) with the 84 being a career low for her.
The team capped off its season at the Phipps Memorial Tournament at Brookside shooting an impressive round of 360 to take the title by twenty-four shots over runner-up Walsh. Blocker led the way for Malone and finished second overall with a score of 84, two shots behind the individual champion.
