Men’s Basketball Rallies For 67-65 Win Over Notre Dame
The Malone College men’s basketball team moved into a tie for first place in the American Mideast Conference North Division standings on Saturday night with a 67-65 come-from-behind win at home against Notre Dame (OH) College.
The visiting Falcons led 35-24 at halftime and pushed their advantage to 49-37 in the opening moments of the second stanza before the Pioneers fought back, outscoring Notre Dame 23-7 over the next ten minutes to take a 60-56 lead with just over five minutes to play. The Falcons quickly responded with a 9-2 run that put them back in front 65-62. Notre Dame’s late second-half scoring spurt was capped off by guard Jerome Pierce’s seventh three-point field goal of the night but unfortunately for the Falcons, this basket at the 3:49 mark of the second half would turn out to be their final points of the evening.
Malone senior forward Tyler Renner (Garaway H.S.) answered Pierce’s trey on the Pioneers’ next trip down the floor with a three-pointer of his own that knotted the game at 65-65. Following a missed Notre Dame three-pointer, senior center Shane Humphrey (Loudonville H.S.) added a lay-up to put the hosts on top 67-65 with 2:33 remaining. The Malone defense then locked down to hold the Falcons scoreless over their final three possessions. Pierce, who poured in a game-high 31 points on the night, got off a pair of shots in the final ten seconds but neither of his game-tying attempts would fall as Malone held on for the thrilling 67-65 triumph.
With a victory in their only contest of the week, the Pioneers extended their current winning streak to four games and improved their record to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the AMC North Division. Malone has won 11 out of its last 12 games and is now tied with Daemen (NY) College for first place in the divisional standings (the Wildcats are currently 3-1 in the division, but defeated the Pioneers earlier this year in the first of their two regular-season meetings). The loss snapped Notre Dame’s five-game winning streak and dropped the Falcons’ record to 10-12 overall and 3-1 in the division.
Malone connected on 22 of its 49 (44.9%) shots from the field on the night, including 13 of 24 (54.2%) attempts in the second half. Notre Dame converted on 57.7% (15 of 26) of its field goal attempts in the opening frame but struggled in the second half as the visitors were outscored 43-30 and made only eight of their 23 (34.8%) shot attempts. The Pioneers out-rebounded the Falcons 19-10 in the final stanza and ended the night with a 29-27 advantage in total rebounds.
Senior guard Ben Carver (Shelby H.S.) posted 17 points, four rebounds and three assists for Malone. Renner followed with 14 points and a team-high eight boards while junior forward Jarrod Ferwerda (Lake H.S.) tossed in ten points.
Pierce tallied four rebounds and three steals to go with his 31 points for Notre Dame. Karim McFarlane followed with eight points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Women’s Basketball Splits Pair Of AMC North Division Contests
The Malone College women’s basketball team suffered a narrow 75-74 home defeat to Carlow (PA) University on Tuesday evening after missing three go-ahead shot attempts in the final ten seconds of play. The Pioneers remained resilient, though, and bounced back in a big way on Saturday as the squad handed Notre Dame (OH) College its first American Mideast Conference North Division loss of the season by a final score of 76-70. With the 1-1 week, the Pioneers’ record now stands at 6-14 overall with a 4-4 mark in the AMC North.
Trailing by one point with 21 ticks remaining on the clock in Tuesday’s game against Carlow, the Pioneers called a timeout to set up a potential game-winning shot on their final possession. Malone then had three looks at the basket from inside the three-point arc during the final moments but none of the attempts would fall before the Celtics snagged a defensive rebound as time expired to secure the hard-fought 75-74 victory.
Carlow led the tightly-contested match-up 40-38 at the half and then pushed its advantage to as many as seven points early in the second frame before an 8-2 Malone run put the hosts on top 68-63 with just under five minutes remaining. The Celtics surged back moments later, however, with a 10-2 run that put them in front 75-72 with 1:19 showing on the clock. Pioneer sophomore guard Bree Zehnder (Garaway H.S.) then hit a jumper seconds later to cut the deficit to one point at 75-74. Each squad came up empty on its next few trips down the floor, setting up Malone’s final possession.
Malone, which had tallied a 67-61 road victory at Carlow earlier this season (January 15th), shot over 40% (29 of 71) from the field on Tuesday night, sinking seven of its 17 (41.2%) three-pointers. The Pioneers also held a slim 43-42 advantage in total rebounds, but struggled somewhat at the foul line, connecting on nine of 15 (60%) free throws. Carlow, meanwhile, made 41.3% (26 of 63) of its overall shot attempts, eight of 24 (33.3%) three-point tries, and was clutch at the charity stripe, draining 15 of 17 (88.2%) free throw attempts.
Senior guard Kellyn Murphy (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) led the way for Malone with 20 points (7-12 FG, 2-3 3PT FG, 4-4 FT), three steals, two rebounds, and two assists. Junior forward Tara Miller (Miami East H.S.) followed with 15 points and 13 boards for her second double-double of the season while freshman guard Allyson Wilson (Firestone H.S.) notched seven points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
Jacqueline Muir scored a game-high 26 points for Carlow. Christina Costa also came up big for the Celtics as she hit five three-pointers and ended the night with 19 points and nine boards.
In Saturday’s contest with Notre Dame, the visiting Falcons, who entered the game in a tie for first place in the American Mideast Conference North Division standings (17-3, 7-0), shot over 56% (18-32) from the field in the opening stanza to build a 44-34 lead at intermission. Malone turned the tables in the second frame, however, as the hosts outscored Notre Dame 28-6 over the first 13 minutes of the second half to take a 62-50 lead. The Falcons battled back, twice cutting the deficit to four points in the final 90 seconds before Wilson sealed the 76-70 win after draining a pair of free throws with just three ticks remaining on the clock.
Malone’s defense clamped down in the second half of Saturday’s contest as the Pioneers outscored Notre Dame 42-26 and held the Falcons to under 21% (7 of 34) shooting from the field. The loss snapped the Falcons’ eight-game winning streak, dropping their overall record to 17-4 on the season (7-1 AMC North).
The Pioneers made over 44% (27 of 61) of their field goal attempts in the contest, including 15 of 30 shots (50%) during the final period. Notre Dame hit six of 18 (33.3%) three-pointers on the night but just 25 of its 66 (37.9%) overall attempts from the field.
Wilson led the way for Malone with 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half. The 5’5” point guard also pulled down seven rebounds and snagged three steals. Murphy also made major contributions for the Pioneers with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals, and a season-high seven assists.
