Indoor Track & Field Teams Compete At University Of Akron Open; Numerous NAIA Qualifying Marks EarnedThe Malone College men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the University of Akron Open last Friday and Saturday as numerous Pioneer student athletes collected NAIA national qualifying marks at the event.
For the women, Rebekah Genter (Jr., Crestview H.S.) led the way with an outstanding second-place effort in the 5000 meters in 17:46.44 to automatically qualify for NAIA nationals in that event while Kalie Hauenstein (So., Ashland H.S.) was just three seconds behind in third place in 17:49.27 to also automatically qualify. Laura McElrath (Sr., Tallmadge H.S.) also achieved the auto qualifier distinction in the pentathlon, scoring 3243 points.
For the men, in the 3000-meter run (Gold Division), Chris Sinick (So., Field H.S.) finished in 10th place in 8:24.89 to automatically qualify while Aaron Melhorn (Fr., Fairless H.S.) qualified provisionally with a 20th-place time of 8:45.37.
In the Blue Division 3000-meter race, James Zeuch (Fr., Galion H.S.) ran an outstanding time of 8:37.06 (2nd place) to qualify automatically. Paul Robinson (So., Field H.S.) and Mike Coates (Sr., Sandy Valley H.S.) were also both auto qualifiers in the event as they placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in times of 8:40.02 and 8:40.39. In addition, Evan Gaynor (So., Delta H.S.) qualified provisionally in the 5000 meters in a time of 15:17.10 (22nd place).
This week, the Malone teams will compete at the Mt. Union College Invitational on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
