Three Malone Athletes Garner NCCAA Student Athlete Of The Week Recognition

Three Malone College athletes collected NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Student Athlete of the Week accolades following their outstanding performances during the week of February 4-10.  Steven Young, of the Pioneer men’s indoor track & field team, Kayleigh Bildstein, of the women’s indoor track & field team, and David Cairns, of the men’s tennis team, each earned the national honor.

Young, a freshman from Gladstone, Missouri, finished second in the triple jump at the Mt. Union Invitational on Saturday with a new Malone indoor record leap of 43’6.75”.

Bildstein, a freshman middle distance runner from Madison, Ohio (Madison H.S.), led her squad to a first place finish among 11 schools at the Mt. Union Invitational after winning the 1000-meter run (3:12.36) and placing second in the one-mile run (5:34.91).  Bildstein accounted for 18 of Malone’s 145 points, helping the squad easily defeat runner-up Mt. Union, which tallied 67.33 points on the afternoon.

Cairns, a freshman from Strongsville, Ohio (home schooled), helped Malone open its 2008 season with wins over NCAA Division II West Liberty State University and NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College.  Cairns won both of his #3 singles matches and teamed with sophomore Tim Frazier (Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania) to win both #3 doubles competitions.  In the B-W match, with Malone trailing 4-1, which included losses at the #1 and #2 doubles, the Pioneers won each of the remaining four singles matches in three sets each.  In that final singles match, Cairns fought back against cramps and the loss of his regular racket to emerge with the victory and secure the stunning come-from-behind 5-4 win over Baldwin-Wallace.
