Pioneers Improve To 5-1 On The Season With Doubleheader Sweep Of Mayville State (ND)

The Malone College baseball team stretched its winning streak in Arizona to four games on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Mayville State (ND) University.  The Pioneers won the opener with the Comets 7-3 before taking the nightcap by an 11-3 final.  With the two victories, Malone’s record now stands at 5-1 on the young season.

In game one, senior center fielder Troy Richeson (Minerva H.S.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and then scored on an RBI groundout by senior right fielder John Stallings (Louisville H.S.).  Malone then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a quartet of two-out, RBI singles that stretched the Pioneers’ advantage to 5-0.  Mayville State cut into the deficit by scoring three runs over the next two innings before junior first baseman Ryan Baechel (GlenOak H.S.) put the game out of reach with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.  Junior right-hander Ryan Hartong (Dalton H.S.) started on the mound and recorded his first win of the season (1-1) for Malone after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings pitched.  Senior outfielder Chris Mandeville (Tuslaw H.S.) went 3-3 at the plate with a double and two singles while senior infielder Zach Winkhart (Canton Central Catholic H.S.) recorded a pair of singles in three at-bats.

Tuesday’s second game with Mayville State was tied 1-1 going into the top of the third but the Malone bats then exploded for eight runs over the next three innings to give the Pioneers a commanding 9-1 lead.  The Comets tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 9-3 before Malone plated two more runs in the top of the seventh to cement the 11-3 win.  Sophomore left-hander Todd Liberatore (Tusc. Central Catholic H.S.) earned the victory (1-0) for the Pioneers after working 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking just one.  Richeson went 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI, freshman second baseman Justin Shiflett (Zane Trace H.S.) went 3-3 with a two-run triple and four runs scored, and Stallings registered two singles with three runs batted in.

Malone has an off day in Arizona on Wednesday and will return to action on Thursday afternoon with a 12:00 p.m. (MST) doubleheader against Waynesburg (PA) University.
