Men’s Basketball Suffers Heart-Breaking 84-83 Loss To Cedarville In AMC Tournament Final
The Malone College men’s basketball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday night at Osborne Hall as Cedarville guard Ryan Short hit a clutch jumper with 0.6 seconds remaining to clinch an 84-83 victory in the title game of the American Mideast Conference Tournament and give the visiting Yellow Jackets an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
Malone trailed 77-70 with six minutes to play before a 9-2 Pioneer run knotted the score at 79-79 at the 3:25 mark of the second half. After each squad came up empty on its next few possessions, Malone senior forward Tyler Renner (Garaway H.S.) stepped to the free throw line with 60 seconds remaining and drained both of his attempts to put the Pioneers in front by two at 81-79. Short then missed a jumper on Cedarville’s next trip down the floor and, following a Malone timeout, Renner scored on a tough drive to the bucket to push the Pioneer lead to 83-79 with 16 ticks showing on the game clock. The Yellow Jackets immediately cut the deficit back to one, however, as just seconds after Renner’s big shot, Cedarville point guard Grant Walker nailed a three-pointer to trim Malone’s lead to 83-82. The Yellow Jackets immediately fouled on the Pioneers’ ensuing inbounds play, setting up two free attempts with 10 seconds remaining. Both of Malone’s shots from the charity stripe were off the mark, though, giving Cedarville one last chance. Short’s go-ahead jumper rolled around the rim before finally trickling in to put the Yellow Jackets on top 84-83 with 0.6 showing on the scoreboard. Malone attempted to get off a desperation shot but the final horn sounded before the Pioneers could launch a deep three-point attempt.
Following the tough 84-83 loss, Malone ended its successful season with a 21-10 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the American Mideast Conference North Division. Cedarville, ranked No. 18 in the final NAIA Division II National Poll, improved to 22-7 with the win and advanced to the national tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Although the Yellow Jackets hit over 57% (8 of 14) of their three-pointers in the opening stanza, Malone kept things close throughout the first half, trailing by a slim 46-45 margin at intermission. Cedarville then stretched its lead out to seven points midway through the final frame before the Pioneers fought back to set up the dramatic finish.
Both teams shot the ball well in Tuesday’s contest as the Yellow Jackets connected on 49.2% (31 of 63) of their overall shots, 48% (12 of 25) of their three-pointers and 90.9% (10 of 11) of their free throws. Malone held a 33-27 advantage in total rebounds and made 52.7% (29 of 55) of its field goal attempts, 42.9% (9 of 21) of its treys, and 80% (16 of 20) if its shots from the free throw line.
Renner turned in an incredible performance in the final game of his Malone playing career as he registered a career-high 36 points (14-21 FG, 3-6 3PT FG, 5-6 FT) to go with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Senior guard Ben Carver (Shelby H.S.) followed with 17 points, five assists and two steals. Senior center Shane Humphrey (Loudonville H.S.) tallied 14 points and six boards and junior forward Jarrod Ferwerda (Lake H.S.) tossed in eight points.
Cedarville was led by guard Chris Beals, who notched 21 points (6-11 FG, 5-9 3PT FG, 4-5 FT). Matt Harner came off the bench to post 13 points while Short finished the game with 12 points and five assists.
Pioneer Notes: Tyler Renner led the team in scoring this season at 18.0 points per game followed by Carver at 16.0 and Humphrey at 11.3…Renner also paced the squad in rebounding with 8.2 boards per outing followed by Humphrey with 6.0 and Carver with 5.1…Carver averaged a team-high 3.0 assists per outing this year.
Senior Stats: Ben Carver scored 1285 points in his four-year Malone playing career which ranks as the 26th-highest scoring total in Pioneer men’s basketball history…Carver also pulled down 411 career boards which ranks 38th all-time at Malone…In four years as a Pioneer, Shane Humphrey amassed 1056 points and 596 rebounds, totals which rank 44th (scoring) and 19th (rebounding) on Malone’s all-time lists…Tyler Renner racked up 1777 points in his four years in a Pioneer uniform, which ranks 11th on the Pioneers’ all-time scoring list… Renner was just two points shy of tying Keith Troyer (played at Malone 1986-1990) for 10th all-time…In addition to his impressive point total, Renner also grabbed 848 career rebounds which ranks 6th on Malone’s all-time list.
Baseball Posts 9-1 Record On The Week, Returns From Arizona With 10-2 Overall Mark
After splitting its season-opening doubleheader with Madonna (MI) University last Saturday (March 1) in Arizona, the Malone College baseball team went on to win nine of ten games at the Greater Phoenix Invitational last week and returned to Ohio following a very successful spring break trip with an impressive 10-2 overall record.
Last Monday, the Pioneer bats exploded for 27 hits in a 21-2 rout of the University of Mary (ND). After expending all of that offensive firepower in Monday’s opener, it was pitching that took center stage later in the day against Madonna as senior right-hander Zach Winkhart (Canton Central Catholic H.S.) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Malone to a 1-0 victory. On Tuesday, the Pioneers swept a doubleheader with Mayville State (ND) University, winning by final scores of 7-3 and 11-3. After an off day on Wednesday, the squad resumed play on Thursday with convincing wins of 14-1 and 15-6 over Waynesburg (PA) College. The Pioneers split a twinbill with St. Cloud State (MN) University on Friday, falling 10-3 in the opener before bouncing back to take the nightcap 4-3. Malone then wrapped up play in Arizona on Saturday by taking two more games from Mayville State by final scores of 8-3 and 5-2.
This year (2008) marks the second time in three years that the Pioneers have started the year with a 10-2 record. Malone also won 10 of its first 12 games in 2006 as the squad went on to win the NCCAA National Championship with a 40-20 overall mark.
Against Mary on Monday, Malone scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead and then put the game out of reach with 10 runs in the top of the third. The Marauders retired the Pioneers’ first batter of the third inning but, after a pair of walks, the next nine Malone batters recorded base hits to stretch the lead to 14-0. Mary finally brought the big inning to a close after inducing two fly outs but the Marauders could not recover from the huge offensive outburst, falling by a 21-2 final. Junior right-handed pitcher Adam Boudler (Louisville H.S.) started and recorded the victory (1-0) after tossing five innings, giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two. Seven different Pioneer batters recorded at least two hits in the game.
Senior outfielder Chris Mandeville (Tuslaw H.S.) turned in an incredible performance as he went 5-6 in the contest, finishing a home run short of the cycle. Mandeville scored three runs and notched four RBI with a triple, two doubles, and two singles. Junior catcher Jon Lutton (Louisville H.S.) tallied four hits in four at-bats with three runs batted in and infielder Zac Barson (Canton South H.S.) went 4-6 at the plate with a two-run double.
In Monday’s contest with Madonna, the Pioneers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning after pinch runner Mike Tozzi (Jr., Sandy Valley H.S.) scored from second base on a botched pick-off attempt. This single run was all Winkhart would need as he recorded his first win of the season (1-0) after surrendering just three hits with one strikeout and one walk in seven scoreless innings of work. Lutton also helped keep Madonna off the scoreboard by gunning down all four Crusaders who attempted to steal bases in the seven-inning contest. Malone recorded five hits (all singles) in the 1-0 victory.
In game one versus Mayville State on Tuesday, senior center fielder Troy Richeson (Minerva H.S.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and then scored on an RBI groundout by senior right fielder John Stallings (Louisville H.S.). Malone tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a quartet of two-out, RBI singles that stretched the Pioneers’ advantage to 5-0. Mayville State cut into the deficit by scoring three runs over the next two innings before junior first baseman Ryan Baechel (GlenOak H.S.) put the game out of reach with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior right-hander Ryan Hartong (Dalton H.S.) started on the mound and recorded his first win of the season (1-1) for Malone after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Mandeville went 3-3 at the plate with a double and two singles while Winkhart recorded a pair of singles in three at-bats.
Tuesday’s second game with Mayville State was tied 1-1 going into the top of the third but the Malone bats then exploded for eight runs over the next three innings to give the Pioneers a commanding 9-1 lead. The Comets tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 9-3 before Malone plated two more runs in the top of the seventh to cement the 11-3 win. Sophomore left-hander Todd Liberatore (Tusc. Central Catholic H.S.) earned the victory (1-0) for the Pioneers after working 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking just one. Richeson went 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI, freshman second baseman Justin Shiflett (Zane Trace H.S.) went 3-3 with a two-run triple and four runs scored, and Stallings registered two singles with three runs batted in.
In Thursday’s opener with Waynesburg, Malone plated seven runs in the first three innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fourth but the Pioneers tacked on seven more runs over the final three innings to pull away for the 14-1 triumph. Junior right-hander Sam Campitella (Jackson H.S.) started on the mound for Malone and earned his first win of the season (1-0) after tossing six innings, surrendering one unearned run on five hits while striking out seven and walking just one. The Pioneers ripped 20 hits in the contest as 12 different Malone batters tallied at least one hit. Tozzi and sophomore infielder Karl Ferber (New London H.S.) each tallied two hits with three runs batted in.
Malone picked up right where it left off in game two against Waynesburg as the squad notched five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a Baechel three-run homer. The Pioneers scored four more times over the next two innings to stretch their lead to 9-1 and then put the game away with six runs in the top of the fifth en route to the 15-6 final. Senior right-hander Josh McKeivier (Strasburg H.S.) started the game and recorded the victory (1-0) after giving up three runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Baechel finished 2-5 with five RBI, Lutton went 2-4 with a one-run single and a two-run double, Richeson was 3-5 with three runs scored and a RBI triple, and freshman outfielder Jeff Shenker (Twinsburg H.S.) went 3-4 with two runs batted in.
In Friday’s opener with St. Cloud State, Malone scored once in the bottom of the second inning and once in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 2-0 lead before the Huskies took command, scoring 10 runs over the final three innings of the contest to secure the 10-3 come-from-behind win. Senior lefty Jimmy Dowling (Tuslaw H.S.) started on the mound and took the loss (1-1) after giving up four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings of work. Junior shortstop Scott McIlvain (Marlington H.S.) went 3-4 in the game, Winkhart drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and a single, and Barson plated a run in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single.
Baechel gave Malone an early lead in Friday’s second game with a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the third inning. St. Cloud State rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth but the Pioneers immediately responded in the top of the sixth as Richeson put the Pioneers back in front at 4-3 with a two-out, run-scoring single. The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the inning by putting runners at the corners with one out but Boudler escaped the jam and then retired the three St. Cloud State batters in order in the seventh to preserve the 4-3 win. Boudler surrendered three unearned runs on six hits while striking out four in the complete-game victory, his second win of the young season (2-0). Malone cranked 10 hits in the contest as Shenker and Mandeville each went 2-4 with one run scored.
In Saturday’s opener against Mayville State, the Pioneers set the tone for the day in the top of the first inning by plating a total of six runs, three of which came on Lutton’s bases-clearing triple. The Comets answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 6-2 but Malone then posted solo runs in the second and fifth innings to cement the 8-3 win. Winkhart started the game and earned his second victory of the season (2-0) after limiting Mayville State to three runs on four hits over seven innings pitched. The 6’2” senior also helped his own cause at the plate, going 3-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Mandeville clobbered a pair of doubles with one RBI and Barson ripped a single to go with two runs scored.
Against Mayville State in Saturday’s finale, the Comets struck first with two runs in the top of the first. However, like it had done throughout much of its trip to Arizona, Malone came through with a big inning, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Each squad threatened over the remainder of the contest but no one crossed the plate during the final five innings as Hartong entered the contest in the top of the sixth and recorded his first save of the year after working the final two scoreless innings. Shenker, a left-hander, started the game and earned his first collegiate win (1-0) after limiting the Comets to two runs on five hits over five innings of work. McIlvain and Richeson each clubbed two-run singles in the Pioneers' five-run second inning. Shiflett went 2-2 in the contest with a pair of singles while Tozzi, who started in left field, ended the day with one hit, one RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base.
This week, Malone (10-2 overall, 0-0 AMC) will open its Ohio schedule at home on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. contest against Notre Dame (OH) College (3-4 overall, 0-0 AMC). Friday’s game, which is to be played at Canton’s Thurman Munson Stadium, will be preceded by a junior varsity contest at 4:00 p.m. The Pioneers and Falcons will square off again on Saturday afternoon (at Munson Stadium) with a varsity game at 1:00 p.m. followed by a JV contest at 4:00 p.m.
Softball Opens Season With 5-1 Trip To Florida
The Malone College softball team, under the direction of third-year head coach Angela Seders, began its 2008 season over spring break by playing six games at the Disney Challenge in Orlando, Florida. The Pioneers opened the trip on Tuesday with an 8-2 loss to Thiel (PA) College before bouncing back later in the day to notch a 10-3 win over Susquehanna (PA) University. On Wednesday, Malone swept a doubleheader with Cedar Crest (PA) College by final scores of 2-1 and 9-0 and then clobbered Alvernia (PA) College 13-1 in six innings. The Pioneers concluded the trip on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Rochester (MI) College. Malone had another game partially completed on Thursday afternoon but could not finish the contest due to heavy rain showers. Following its successful spring break trip, the squad begins the year with a 5-1 overall record.
Against Thiel, the Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning before the Tomcats answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman infielder Karre Thompson (East Canton H.S.) pulled Malone to within 3-2 in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout but Thiel then added five runs over the next two innings to pull away for the 8-2 victory. Junior Ashleigh Ralston (Wadsworth H.S.) started on the mound and took the loss (0-1) for the Pioneers after giving up three runs on four hits over four innings pitched. Malone recorded nine hits in the game as sophomore outfielders Morgan Heacock (Mt. Gilead H.S.) and Laura Blackburn (Thomas Worthington H.S.) each went 2-4 at the plate with one stolen base.
In Tuesday’s contest with Susquehanna, the Crusaders jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the top of the first. The Pioneer bats got going in the bottom of the third, though, as Malone plated six runs to take a 6-3 lead. Malone then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to nail down the 10-3 victory. After surrendering the three first-inning runs (only one of which was earned), freshman starting pitcher Jessica Krska (Norton H.S.) settled in, holding Susquehanna scoreless over the remainder of the contest to record her first win of the year (1-0). Thompson went 2-4 in the game with two runs scored and senior infielder Becki Martin (Lakewood H.S.) plated two runs with a pair of RBI singles.
In game one versus Cedar Crest on Wednesday, the Falcons scored in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Malone fought back to knot the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single by Heacock and then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run-scoring single by Blackburn. These two runs were all Ralston would need as she shut out Cedar Crest over the final six innings to preserve the 2-1 win and earn her first victory of the season (1-1). Ralston tossed a total of seven innings, giving up just the one run on five hits while striking out three.
In game two against the Falcons, Malone took command early with four runs in the top of the second inning. The Pioneers tacked on another run in the third to stretch their advantage to 5-0 and then put the game away with four more runs in the top of the fifth. Senior starting pitcher Kathryn Bzdafka (Avon Lake H.S.) went the distance on the mound for Malone in the 9-0, five-inning victory, earning her first win (1-0) of the year after surrendering just one hit and striking out one batter. The Pioneers smacked 12 hits in the contest as Ralston went 3-3 with a RBI single and a three-run homer. Senior outfielder Ashlee Locker (Strasburg H.S.) went 3-3 with two runs batted in and freshman infielder Sarah Kosmos (Northwest H.S.) ripped a pair of singles with three runs scored and one stolen base.
In Wednesday’s finale with Alvernia, Malone scored three times in the top of the first and once in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Crusaders plated a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1 but the Pioneers then exploded for nine runs over the next two innings to pull away for the 13-1, six-inning win. Krska went the distance on the mound for Malone, earning her second victory of the year (2-0) after surrendering one run on four hits while striking out four and walking none. Blackburn went 2-2 at the plate with three RBI while Heacock and freshman outfielder Elizabeth Sarkissian (Twinsburg H.S.) each stole two bases and scored three runs.
On Thursday against Rochester, Malone scored both its runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by Blackburn and a run-scoring single by Thompson. Ralston then made these two runs stand up over the remainder of the game as she limited the Warriors to one run on four hits over seven innings of work to notch her second win of the season (2-1). Rochester scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch but it was unable to complete the comeback as Ralston kept the Warriors off the scoreboard over the final three innings. The Pioneers posted six hits in the game as Martin went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.
This week, Malone (5-1 overall, 0-0 AMC North) is scheduled to host a doubleheader against Aquinas (MI) College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
