The Pioneers were unable to get a runner on base in the opener, falling in five innings by the final score of 8-0. Then in the nightcap, Walsh scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and three more runs in the top of the sixth to pull away for a 12-4, six-inning victory. Following the pair of tough defeats, Malone dropped to 5-3 overall with a 0-2 mark in the AMC North. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the division.
In game one, Walsh starting pitcher Dana Hartings struck out eight Pioneer batters over five perfect innings to lead her squad to the win. Hartings also contributed at the plate with a two-run, first-inning homer. Junior pitcher Ashleigh Ralston (Wadsworth H.S.) started and took the loss (2-2) after surrendering five runs (two earned) on three hits over 1.2 innings of work.
Walsh secured an early 3-0 lead in game two by plating three runs in the top of the first, but Malone answered back in the bottom of the inning as senior starting pitcher Kathryn Bzdafka (Avon Lake H.S.) clubbed a two-run homer to trim the deficit to 3-2. The Cavaliers quickly put two more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second to stretch their lead to 5-2 and then put the game away with seven runs over the final two innings. Bzdafka suffered her first loss of the season (1-1) after giving up 12 runs (only four earned) on 13 hits over six innings pitched. The Pioneers recorded six hits in the contest as freshman catcher Laura Ronk (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) and freshman infielder Sarah Kosmos (Northwest H.S.) each went 1-3 with a run-scoring single.
