Four Pioneers Collect NCCAA Student Athlete Of The Week Honors

Four Malone College athletes recently garnered NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Student Athlete of the Week recognition following their impressive performances over the past three weeks.  Zach Winkhart, of the Pioneer baseball team, Ashleigh Ralston, of the softball team, Kalie Hauenstein, of the women’s outdoor track & field team, and Aaron Melhorn, of the men’s outdoor track & field team, each earned the national honor.

Winkhart, a senior right-handed pitcher and infielder from Massillon, Ohio (Canton Central Catholic H.S.), helped Malone post a 9-1 record March 3-8 during the squad’s spring break trip to Arizona by batting .520 with seven runs scored and five runs batted in.  Winkhart also started on the mound in two of the Pioneers’ contests and notched a pair of victories, surrendering just three earned runs over 13 innings of work (2.08 ERA).

Ralston, a junior pitcher and first baseman from Wadsworth, Ohio (Wadsworth H.S.), led Malone to a 5-1 record March 4-6 at the Disney Challenge in Orlando, Florida by tallying a 2-1 record on the mound.  She surrendered just five earned runs over 18 innings pitched (1.94 ERA) and also contributed at the plate with three hits in five at-bats (.600 batting average).  In the Pioneers’ March 5th, 9-0 win over Cedar Crest College, Ralston went 3-3 with a one-run single and a grand slam.

Hauenstein, a sophomore distance runner from Polk, Ohio (Ashland H.S.), automatically qualified for NAIA Nationals at the Wake Forest University Open this weekend (March 21-22) after winning the 10,000 meters in an impressive time of 37:13.22.

Melhorn, a freshman distance runner from Navarre, Ohio (Fairless H.S.), won the 5000 meter run at the Wake Forest University Open this weekend (March 21-22) in a blistering time of 14:28.86.  With this strong performance against a primarily NCAA Division I field, Melhorn automatically qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships.
