Akron Tops Pioneers 6-2

The Malone College baseball team was held to four hits on Wednesday afternoon in a 6-2 loss at the University of Akron.  The Pioneers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Zips then blanked Malone over the next seven innings as they plated six unanswered runs to pull away for the 6-2 win.  Following the hard-fought defeat, the Pioneers’ overall record now stands at 15-7 on the year.

Senior centerfielder Troy Richeson (Minerva H.S.) put Malone in front 1-0 in the early going after drawing a lead-off walk, advancing to second on a wild pitch and then scoring on a one-out single to center by junior first baseman Ryan Baechel (GlenOak H.S.).  Akron (12-8 overall) pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second with a pair of unearned runs and then tacked on one run in the fourth, one run in the fifth, and two runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead.  The Pioneers brought a run home in the ninth on an RBI groundout by freshman outfielder Jeff Shenker (Twinsburg H.S.), but the visitors were then unable to cut into the deficit any further.  Senior righthander Josh McKeivier (Strasburg Franklin H.S.) started on the mound and took the loss (1-1) after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits over 4.2 innings pitched.  Malone recorded four hits in the contest as junior second baseman Mike Tozzi (Sandy Valley H.S.) went 1-3 with a stolen base.

The Pioneers will return to conference play on Friday and Saturday when they travel to southern Ohio for a pair of AMC doubleheaders.  The squad will play two games at the University of Rio Grande (13-12 overall, 1-3 AMC) on Friday at 1:00 p.m. before facing Shawnee State University (8-14 overall, 3-1 AMC) in a twinbill on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
