Point Park Takes Two From Malone

The Malone College softball team dropped a pair of American Mideast Conference North Division games at Point Park (PA) University on Saturday afternoon, falling by final scores of 3-1 and 5-1.  Point Park grabbed an early lead in both contests and then used strong pitching to prevent Malone’s comeback attempts.  Following the pair of conference defeats, Malone’s record now stands at 8-8 overall with a 2-6 mark in AMC North play.

In game one, Point Park (7-7 overall, 2-2 AMC North) scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Malone cut into the deficit with a run in the top of the fifth, but the squad was unable to muster any additional offense over the final two innings, losing by the 3-1 final.  Freshman starting pitcher Jessica Krska (Norton H.S.) went the distance on the mound for Malone and took the tough loss (3-2) after surrendering three unearned runs on seven hits over six innings of work.  Malone tallied four hits in the contest, all singles.

Point Park pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two.  The hosts then tacked on a two-run homer in the fourth and a one-run double in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 advantage.  Malone responded in the top of the sixth as senior centerfielder Ashlee Locker (Strasburg H.S.) led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a single by freshman catcher Laura Ronk (St. Vincent-St. Mary) and then later came home on a Point Park fielding error.  The visitors were unable to close the gap any further, though, as Point Park held on for the 5-1 win.  Senior pitcher Kathryn Bzdafka (Avon Lake H.S.) started the game and suffered the loss (1-3) after giving up five runs on ten hits over four innings pitched.  Malone registered seven hits in the game as Locker went 2-3 at the plate with one run scored.

This week, Malone (8-8 overall, 2-6 AMC North) will travel to NCAA Division III #18 Mount Union College (19-3 overall, 4-0 OAC) on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader before returning home to host two games against NCAA Division II Ashland University (11-11 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.  The Pioneers return to conference play on Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders against Notre Dame (OH) College (5-7 overall, 2-2 AMC North). Malone will host a twinbill against the Falcons on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and will then travel to Notre Dame for two more games on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
