The Malone College men's and women's track & field teams hosted the first annual Jack Hazen Open Track & Field Meet last Saturday in which over 25 schools and nearly 45 different teams were represented. In a non-traditional format in which five different types of play were used (alternate shot, scramble, stroke play 1, stroke play 2 and match play), Malone scored a total of 28 points to post its second-place finish as Ohio Northern University won the event with 31 1/2 points. A strong second-place showing in stroke play 1 earned the team five points followed by a third-place finish in stroke play 2 (4 pts). The top finish in match play, with six wins and no losses, earned the team 12 points and ultimately lifted them into their final second-place overall finish, just 3 1/2 points behind champion Ohio Northern.

Baseball Notches 3-2 Record On The Week
The Malone College baseball team split a doubleheader at local rival Walsh University on Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-6 in game one before bouncing back to take the nightcap by a final score of 4-2. The Pioneers next dropped a 6-2 decision at the University of Akron on Wednesday afternoon. Then, after its scheduled twinbill at the University of Rio Grande was rained out on Friday, the squad wrapped up the week on Saturday with a pair of victories at Shawnee State University, winning game one 7-6 in eight innings before taking the finale 6-4. Following the 3-2 week, the Pioneers’ record now stands at 17-7 overall with a 6-2 mark in the American Mideast Conference.
Walsh led 4-0 in game one on Tuesday before the Pioneers plated five runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 5-4 lead. The Cavaliers knotted the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth but a solo homer by junior Ryan Baechel (GlenOak H.S.) put Malone back in front 6-5 in the top of the seventh. With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the inning, the Pioneers appeared to have things under control but Walsh refused to concede, bringing the tying and winning runs home with three straight singles and a Malone fielding error. Junior right-handed pitcher Adam Boudler (Louisville H.S.) took the loss for the Pioneers after working 1.1 innings of relief. Malone smacked 10 hits in the contest as Baechel went 2-3 with two home runs and three RBI while senior right-fielder John Stallings (Louisville H.S.) drove home a pair of runs with a fifth-inning double.
The host Cavaliers again jumped out to an early lead in game two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Baechel pulled Malone to within one run with a lead-off homer in the top of the fifth and then tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh with another deep drive over the outfield wall. Junior catcher Zac Barson (Canton South H.S.) then walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman infielder Jeff Shenker (Twinsburg H.S.) and scored the go-ahead run on a single by junior shortstop Scott McIlvain (Marlington H.S.). McIlvain then came around to score later in the inning to put the Pioneers on top 4-2. Sophomore southpaw Todd Liberatore (Tusc. Central Catholic H.S.) retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to cement the 4-2 complete-game victory. Liberatore improved to 3-0 on the year after limiting Walsh to two runs on seven hits over his seven innings of work. Baechel wrapped up an incredible day at the plate with a total of four home runs in the two games.
In Wednesday’s nine-inning contest against Akron, the Pioneers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Zips then blanked Malone over the next seven innings as they plated six unanswered runs to pull away for the 6-2 win. Senior centerfielder Troy Richeson (Minerva H.S.) gave the Pioneers the early lead after drawing a lead-off walk, advancing to second on a wild pitch and then scoring on a one-out single to center by Baechel. Akron pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second with a pair of unearned runs and then tacked on one run in the fourth, one run in the fifth, and two runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead. The Pioneers brought a run home in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Shenker but the visitors were then unable to cut into the deficit any further. Senior righthander Josh McKeivier (Strasburg Franklin H.S.) started on the mound and took the loss (1-1) after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits over 4.2 innings pitched. Malone recorded four hits in the contest as junior second baseman Mike Tozzi (Sandy Valley H.S.) went 1-3 with a stolen base.
In game one against Shawnee State, the Bears entered the top of the seventh inning with a 6-2 advantage before Malone struck for four runs to knot the contest at 6-6. Notably, the Pioneers did not record a base hit during their four-run rally in the seventh inning. The squad still managed to tie the game, though, thanks to three batters being hit by pitches, two bases on balls, a Shawnee State error and a sacrifice fly. Following a scoreless bottom of the seventh, Stallings scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth after drawing a lead-off walk, stealing second and then coming home to score on a single by Baechel. Freshman right-handed pitcher Bryan Bayer (Fairless H.S.) picked up the win (1-0) in relief after entering the game in the bottom of the seventh and holding Shawnee State off the scoreboard over the final 1.1 innings. Junior right-hander Sam Campitella (Jackson H.S.) started on the mound and earned a no decision after surrendering six runs (three earned) on six hits over 6.2 innings of work. Malone ripped seven hits in the game while swiping a total of eight bases. Senior leftfielder Chris Mandeville (Tuslaw H.S.) led the way offensively as he went 2-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and three steals.
In game two at Shawnee, the Pioneers plated three runs in the top of the fourth and three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. The Bears cut the deficit to 6-4 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth but Bayer then entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and worked a scoreless inning to preserve the 6-4 victory with his first career save. Boudler started and recorded his team-leading fourth win (4-2) of the season after limiting Shawnee State to four runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings pitched. Boudler struck out five and did not walk a batter. Malone posted nine hits in the contest as Mandeville went 2-2 with a two-run single and two runs scored. Other important contributors included Baechel, who was 2-4 at the plate with a stolen base, and Richeson, who drove in a pair of runs in the top of the sixth with a two-out single.
This week, Malone (17-7 overall, 6-2 AMC) is slated to participate in a total of nine games, starting with a make-up doubleheader at home on Monday at noon against the University of Rio Grande (13-14 overall, 1-5 AMC). The Pioneers will then host two games against local rival Walsh University (13-11 overall, 7-4 AMC) on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. before traveling to NCAA Division I Cleveland State University (8-12 overall, 3-3 Horizon League) on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. for a single, nine-inning contest. Malone will host a twinbill against NAIA No. 23 Ohio Dominican University (17-7 overall, 6-0 AMC) on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and will then wrap up the week on Saturday with another 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at home against Notre Dame (OH) College (13-13 overall, 5-7 AMC). Saturday will be Bob Starcher Memorial Day in honor of the former long-time Malone baseball head coach.
Softball Sweeps Twinbill With Ursuline, Drops Two Games At Point Park
The Malone College softball team won both games of its American Mideast Conference North Division doubleheader against Ursuline College on Thursday evening but then fell to Point Park (PA) University in a pair of contests on the road Saturday afternoon. In Thursday’s home games, the Pioneers used late scoring outbursts to take the opener 5-3 and the nightcap 8-4. On Saturday, Point Park grabbed an early lead in both contests and then used strong pitching to hold on for wins of 3-1 and 5-1. Following the 2-2 week in AMC North play, Malone’s record now stands at 8-8 overall with a 2-6 mark in the division.
The Pioneers entered the bottom of the fifth inning of game one on Thursday against Ursuline trailing 3-1 but then plated four runs over the final two innings to tally the 5-3, come-from-behind win. Sophomore outfielder Laura Blackburn (Thomas Worthington H.S.) keyed the late surge with a clutch two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. Junior pitcher Ashleigh Ralston (Wadsworth H.S.) started on the mound and earned her fourth win of the season (4-3) after giving up three unearned runs on eight hits over seven innings pitched. Blackburn, sophomore outfielder Morgan Heacock (Mt. Gilead H.S.), and freshman catcher Laura Ronk (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) each notched two hits in the contest with one stolen base apiece.
In game two with the Arrows, the Pioneers were clinging to a one-run lead before they scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for the 8-4 triumph. Blackburn again delivered the big blow with another two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman starting pitcher Jessica Krska (Norton H.S.) picked up her third victory of the year (3-1) after limiting Ursuline to four unearned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one. The Pioneers recorded a season-high 14 hits in the game as freshman infielder Sarah Kosmos (Northwest H.S.) went 4-4 with three runs scored.
In game one on Saturday, Point Park scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the second inning. Malone cut into the deficit with a run in the top of the fifth but the squad was unable to muster any additional offense over the final two innings, losing by the 3-1 final. Krska went the distance on the mound for Malone and took the tough loss (3-2) after surrendering three unearned runs on seven hits over six innings of work. Malone tallied four hits in the contest, all singles.
Point Park pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Saturday’s finale. The hosts then tacked on a two-run homer in the fourth and a one-run double in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 advantage. Malone responded in the top of the sixth as senior centerfielder Ashlee Locker (Strasburg H.S.) led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a single by Ronk and then later came home on a Point Park fielding error. The visitors were unable to close the gap any further, though, as Point Park held on for the 5-1 win. Senior pitcher Kathryn Bzdafka (Avon Lake H.S.) started the game and suffered the loss (1-3) after giving up five runs on ten hits over four innings pitched. Malone registered seven hits in the game as Locker went 2-3 at the plate with one run scored.
This week, Malone (8-8 overall, 2-6 AMC North) will travel to NCAA Division III #18 Mount Union College (19-3 overall, 4-0 OAC) on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader before returning home to host two games against NCAA Division II Ashland University (11-11 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers return to conference play on Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders against Notre Dame (OH) College (5-7 overall, 2-2 AMC North). Malone will host a twinbill against the Falcons on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and will then travel to Notre Dame for two more games on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
