Malone Concludes Season By Splitting Doubleheader At WalshThe Malone College softball team wrapped up its 2008 campaign on Thursday night by splitting an American Mideast Conference North Division twinbill at Walsh University. The host Cavaliers rallied to win game one 6-2 before the Pioneers bounced back in the nightcap to register a thrilling 7-6, nine-inning victory. Following Thursday’s action, Malone concludes the year with a 14-22 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the AMC North Division.
The Pioneers held a 1-0 lead in the opener before Walsh (30-10 overall, 18-2 AMC North) took command by plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Malone trimmed the deficit to 4-2 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Cavaliers then plated two more runs in the bottom of the frame to cement the 6-2 win. Senior pitcher Kathryn Bzdafka (Avon Lake H.S.) started and took the loss (3-10) after surrendering four runs on five hits over three innings of work. Freshman first baseman Karre Thompson (East Canton H.S.) led the way offensively for the Pioneers, going 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one run batted in.
Malone entered the bottom of the seventh inning of game two with a 5-2 lead but the host Cavaliers then rallied for three runs to knot the score at 5-5 and send the contest into extra innings. Pioneer freshman catcher Laura Ronk (St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S.) then broke the stalemate in the top of the ninth with a clutch two-out, two-run RBI single that put Malone on top 7-5. Walsh brought home one run in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded with two outs before junior pitcher Ashleigh Ralston (Wadsworth H.S.) induced a fly out to escape the jam and preserve the 7-6 win. Ralston went the distance on the mound, earning her eighth win of the year (8-8) are giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over nine innings of work. Ronk, Ralston, and freshman infielder Sarah Kosmos (Northwest H.S.) each ripped two hits in the game to account for Malone’s total of six base hits. |
