Malone Wins Region Championship; Advances To NAIA National TournamentThe Malone College women's golf team, led by fifth-year head coach Max Baker, captured the AMC/NAIA Region IX championship among a seven-team field at the Sanctuary Golf Course in North Canton last Monday and Tuesday. With the victory in the 36-hole two-day event, the Pioneers qualified for the NAIA National Championships at the Lake San Marcos Country Club in San Diego, California May 20-23.
Malone tallied a score of 720 (369-351) to easily defeat runner-up Urbana University which posted a total of 742 (372-370). Ohio Dominican University placed third (744), Ursuline College was fourth (767), Walsh University took fifth (775), the University of Northwestern Ohio came in sixth (828) and Notre Dame (OH) College was seventh (1097). The Pioneers only led by three strokes over Urbana after day one but pulled away on day two for the convincing 22-stroke victory.
Elena Duncan (So., Winona Lake, IN) led the way for Malone and finished fourth overall with a score of 177 (93-84) while Jen Blocker (So., Westerville H.S.) followed right behind at 178 (90-88) for a fifth-place finish overall. Both were named to the All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play.
Jen Snyder (Fr., Wexford, PA) carded a 181 (90-91), Heather Hall (Sr., Bellefontaine H.S.) fired a 184 (96-88) and Alyssa Westfall (Fr., Ashland H.S.) came in with a 198 (97-101). Snyder and Hall were each named to the All-Tournament Second Team for their efforts.
In addition, Carinna Baldner (Jr., Hillsdale H.S.) was named to the American Mideast Conference Scholar Athlete Team. |
