Frequently Asked Questions

On Becoming Malone University

Q.  What's the difference between a college and a university?
A. Educational institutions which offer master’s level programs and are structured with separate schools, each with separate deans, are more in line with the designation “university” than “college.” Furthermore, on an international level, the term “college” has come to mean high school or technical school. “University” better describes Malone at this stage in the life of the institution.

Q. Why are we changing from a college to a university?
A. Malone is not changing anything but a name. The Institution has followed a university structure – with separate schools, each with a separate dean – since 2001, and offered graduate programs since 1990. Throughout the transition from Malone College to Malone University, our mission to prepare Christian leaders for service to the church, community, and world, remains intact.
Moreover, the word “university” means “one truth.” The word itself supports Malone’s motto of “Christ’s Kingdom First,” and informs our search for truth in recognizing the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Q. Does this mean that you are no longer a Christian school?
A. Nothing could be further from the truth. Malone University will continue to abide by the motto “Christ’s Kingdom First” with the mission of providing students with an education based on biblical faith in order to develop men and women in intellectual maturity, wisdom, and Christian faith who are committed to serving the church, community, and world.

Q.  When will the name change become official?
 A. October 3, 2008 at 10 a.m.

Q. When do alumni officially begin saying they graduated from "Malone University" rather than "Malone College?"
A. Diplomas will read "Malone University," beginning with December, 2008, graduates.  Alumni may begin listing Malone University as their alma mater on resumes, etc, beginning October 3, 2008.

Q. Will this change affect the size of Malone?  Will it get bigger and lose the small college atmosphere?
 A. While growth is desirable, there is nothing in the name change that would suggest a change in campus atmosphere or the ethos of Malone.

Q. Will changing to a university get us more government or private monies?
A. The “university” designation tends to command more respect when it comes to awarding research grants, etc. Hopefully, Malone University will benefit in this way.

Q. What NCAA conference will Malone belong to?
A.  Malone University will continue membership in the NAIA American Mideast Conference, just like Carlow, Cedarville, Mount Vernon Nazarene, Rio Grande, Shawnee State, Urbana, Walsh, and Wilberforce – all universities.

Q. How much more will it cost to go to Malone as a University versus a College?
A. Although rising tuition is a fact of life, neither the designation of university nor college plays a part in determining the cost of a Malone education.

Q. Will the name change give us a more favorable tax status?
A. Malone University will continue to enjoy a tax exempt status as has Malone College.

Q. Will the official address be changed to 2600 Cleveland Ave. instead of 515 25th Street N.W.; Canton, OH 44709?
A. Yes, beginning October 3, 2008, the official address of Malone University will be 2600 Cleveland Avenue, N.W. Canton, OH 44709.  The new address puts Malone’s “front door” on a major street for higher visibility while paying tribute to our Cleveland heritage.

Q. When will I be able to purchase Malone University merchandise?
A. The Malone bookstore will hold a grand reopening on October 3 – be watching for details!

Q. Will the nickname also change?
A. When Malone College moved from Cleveland to Canton in 1957, several traditions were established that remain to this day. The College adopted the nickname “Pioneers” referring to the pioneering spirit of those involved with establishing the young institution. The motto, “Christ’s Kingdom First” appeared for the first time on the newly developed seal in the Latin form: “Regnum Christi Primum.” The school colors – red and white – were selected to symbolize the blood of Christ and purity of the Holy Spirit. These longstanding and dearly held traditions are deeply rooted in Malone’s identity and will not change.

Q. Will the seal and logo change?
A. The logo and seal will be redesigned, however, the essential elements contained within – the dove, Bible, oil lamp, founding date, motto – will continue to represent the integration of faith and learning taking place at the institution since its founding days. A new and consistent sports logo, representing the Pioneers, will be introduced as well.

Q. What will happen to the Malone College signs, plaques, etc.?
A. The University will phase out and replace old signage, based on a list of priorities as deemed appropriate by the leadership team. Prominent signage will be replaced in time for the “unveiling” on October 3. Old signage becomes the property of the sign company and will be recycled.

Q. What about printed pieces – brochures, letterhead, business cards?
A.  In order to be good stewards of our resources, departments are encouraged to continue to use up as much of our current inventory as possible. 1.  Use of the 50th anniversary letterhead will continue through October 2. Should a department run out of anniversary letterhead, please go back to the departmental version of the college logo letterhead.  Should the departmental version of the regular logo run out, please go to the generic version. We will begin using the new Malone University letterhead on October 3. Admissions functions for undergraduate, degree completion, and graduate programs should continue to use “Malone College” materials through October 2. No one should order Malone University materials until the new visual identity has been approved. Departments should work with the Department of College Communications and with the Marketing Department to time printing and mailing of pieces that will say “Malone University.” New business cards may be ordered once the visual identity has been established – but not distributed until October 3.

Q. In planning for publicity (choir outings, Worldview Forum, etc), should we use Malone University on our posters even though some of the events are before October 3.

A. No, but please consider printing simply “Malone” on publicity materials that promote events or concerts that include any dates before October 3.

Q. Uniforms are a considerable expense. How are we to proceed with ordering new band uniforms, nursing uniforms, etc?

A. Please work with the transition committee as soon as you recognize a need. Current uniforms will most likely need to be replaced before completing a typical cycle. All uniforms will say Malone University by 2009. Similarly, BSN and MSN pins presented to nursing students at graduation will need to be redesigned in order to conform to the University visual identity. The 2008-2009 transition year can be utilized to develop a new pin.

Q. Will Malone University receive state funding?
A. Currently, Malone does not receive state funding for operations. Students may receive some form of state funding for financial aid. This will hold true for Malone University as well.

Q. Will Malone University have fraternities and sororities?
A. No.

Q. Are we concerned that people may refer to us as Mooo (MU)?
