Malone Tallies Victories Over Kenyon, Wooster

 
The Malone University volleyball team won both of its contests with NCAA Division III opponents Kenyon College and the College of Wooster on Saturday.  Malone opened play at the Wooster tri-match with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-16 triumph in a neutral contest with Kenyon and then later defeated the event’s host, Wooster, by final scores of 25-17, 28-26, 25-20.  With the pair of non-conference victories, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 15-7.
 
Against Kenyon, outside hitter Jennifer Gahagan (So., Ravenna Southeast H.S.) paced the Malone attack with 11 kills.  Middle hitters Kristen Schoolcraft (Jr., McKinley H.S.) and Erica Gann (Jr., Meadowbrook H.S.) followed with seven and six kills, respectively.  Also contributing to the three-set victory was setter Bethany Thompson’s (Sr., Tusc. Central Catholic H.S.) 16 assists, defensive specialist Kristi Beun’s (Sr., Kidron Central Christian H.S.) eight digs, setter Hannah Riley’s (Fr., Minerva H.S.) two service aces, and Gann’s four blocks (three solo).
 
In Saturday’s later match with Wooster, Gahagan again led the way with 12 kills, 18 digs, and two solo blocks.  Schoolcraft and Gann each followed with eight kills and two solo blocks apiece.  Other contributors included setter Alyssa Dibell (Jr., Fairless H.S.) with 21 assists and outside hitter Lori Ickes (So., Smithville H.S.) with 14 digs.
 
This week, Malone (15-7 overall, 4-0 AMC), which has now won 11 of its last 12 matches, will return to American Mideast Conference play on Saturday as it travels to Cedarville, Ohio to compete in a tri-match with Cedarville University (11-7 overall, 2-1 AMC) and Carlow (PA) University (4-13 overall, 0-4 AMC).  The Pioneers will face off with Carlow at 1:00 p.m. before taking on the host Yellow Jackets at 3:00 p.m.
 
Malone Notes:  Jennifer Gahagan paces the squad in kill with 3.34 per set followed by Erica Gann with 2.20 and Lori Ickes with 1.91…Ickes leads the team in digs at 3.42 per set followed by Gahagan at 3.06 and Hannah Riley at 2.55…Ickes also holds the team lead for service aces with 22…Schoolcraft has tallied a team-high 76 total blocks (0.96 per set)…Alyssa Dibell is averaging a team-best 5.47 assists per set.
