Pioneers Tally Late Second-Half Goal To Force 1-1 Tie With WalshThe Malone University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Walsh University on Tuesday evening. The host Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the opening moments of the second half. Walsh then maintained its slim advantage until the 85th minute when Pioneer forward Aleesha Denmeade (Sr., Hoover H.S.) found the back of the net with her eighth goal of the season off a pass from midfielder Susanna Jonkka (Fr., Helsinki, Finland). After Denmeade’s clutch score, the contest remained deadlocked at 1-1 through two overtime periods, resulting in each squad’s first tie of the year. Following the American Mideast Conference match, Malone’s record moved to 2-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the conference while Walsh’s mark now stands at 7-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the AMC.
Walsh held a 17-6 advantage in total shots on goal in the contest as Pioneer keeper Merisa Salazar (Sr., San Jose, CA) made 13 saves.
