Honors Curriculum
To graduate with Honors Program designation, students complete the following categories:
General Education (minimum 15 credits) Choose from the following three categories:
1. Honors sections of gen. ed. courses taken primarily during freshman & sophomore years:
GEN 100 College Experience
ENG 145 English Composition
ENG 200 Literature in Society
BIBL 111 The Old Testament
COMM 110 Communication Skills
PHIL 100 Introduction to Philosophy
HIST 112 World History II: The Modern World
2. Any one course listed as “Additional, more advanced option” under the Gen. Ed. Lab Science requirements: BIOL 131, 132, 145, 146, 273; CHEM 115, 131; or PHYS 211.
3. Upper division course (3 credits): From the General Education menu, one 300-level course taken during the sophomore year (PHIL 362; ENG 314; MUS 374; HIST 330; HIST/POL 356 or 358; ENG 322; ENG 390).
HON 260 Sophomore Seminar: The Academy and You (1 credit)
Coordinated by the Honors Program Director, guest faculty speakers will introduce students to the concept of research or creative expression appropriate to various academic disciplines. Through readings and research, students will begin to explore possible thesis project ideas.
HON 310 & 312 Junior Year Colloquium: Life of the Mind (two 1-credit courses, one each semester)
Essentially a field experience designed to highlight the responsibilities of Honors students to their communities, particularly responsibilities to foster the life of the mind in their Malone University community. Students assume responsibility for scheduling, promoting, and producing a significant on-campus event (or events) that stimulates the life of the mind.
GEN 460: Faith in the World Honors section (3 credits)
This seminar explores what it means to think and live faithfully in our world by undertaking an in-depth study of an important issue. Each class will engage with the richness and complexity of its subject by considering diverse viewpoints and multiple academic disciplines and exploring their interconnections.
Senior Honors Project (two 2-credit courses)
HON 490 & HON 492
Independent study with a faculty member on a project related to the chosen discipline, usually the major. It may be started during the junior year.
Total: 25 credits, 18 of which are general education. 3.6 GPA at graduation.
