Social Work Club
Social Work Club Events for 2013-14
We are active and excited about our service to the community.
This fall, the two main events for the social work club are:
- Take Back The Night: An annual event on Malone's campus bringing awareness to domestic violence in our community. This year Malone University collaborated with Stark County's Domestic Violence Project, Inc. and The Kent State-Stark Campus theater program, and Peace for Pets, Inc., .Social Work majors assisted with a multi-faceted evening designed to bring awareness to the concerns of domestic violence. Students provided logistical support, created the program, sang songs and read poems that depicted the pain of violence on victims and their families. Students at Malone University have been involve with this project for more than 15 years.
- Poverty Simulation: In collaboration with be:justice and the Malone Reads program, the Social Work Club organized a poverty simulation where students had the opportunity to get a sense of what it would be like to be living at or below the poverty level, as a person who is working and poor. Students were given a scenario of their family situation and monopoly money to decide their budget for the month. Students discovered how difficult it is to live on minimum wage, having to decide between providing food for their family, paying rent, utilities, paying for child care, laundry, and other basic necessities.
