Program Goals and Learning Outcomes

Program Goals 

The overall goals of the Communication Arts Department are: 


  • To provide students opportunities to develop written and oral communication competence
  • To provide students opportunities to develop an orientation for meaningful vocation in a wide variety of communication related careers and activities
  • To provide students opportunities to develop the ability to analyze and critique the relationship between communication and culture

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Communication Arts Department will meet the following objectives: 

  • Students will demonstrate effective competency in the accepted forms and practices of the disciplinary areas.

  • Students will demonstrate their ability to write appropriately and effectively in a variety of communication contexts.

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge, application, effectiveness and appropriateness in oral communication contexts.

  • Students will articulate a philosophy of work and vocation that reflects an understanding of the nature of work and the relationships between gifts, calling and vocation.

  • Students will demonstrate the application of communication theories in various life situations.

  • Students will apply communication concepts and skills to personal interaction and group settings.

Courses in Communication Arts develop students’ knowledge, application skills, effectiveness and appropriateness in interpersonal, written and media communication. A strong concentration of courses shared by all Communication Arts majors prepares a student with general communication abilities in addition to the specialized study of their concentration. 

Communication Studies:
The student who chooses Communication Studies will develop an understanding of core communication concepts and apply them in a wide variety of many different careers, relationships, and settings. This course of study is recommended for any student interested in preparing for graduate studies in communication.

The film concentration includes a mix of production classes and film appreciation and criticism classes in order to produce students whose liberal arts training develops strong aesthetic sensibilities, good storytelling skills and a healthy comfortability with production work. While many film students go on to study or work in Los Angeles, these broad skills can be used in any number of jobs that interface with the public or that develop stories to represent organizations. 

Students who choose journalism prepare for a career in writing for various kinds of media.

Media Communication:
Today’s communities include more than just face-to-face relationships. Students who choose media communication prepare for careers in production, programming, and presentation using media tools and channels.

Public Relations:
Public relations in corporate or non-profit settings involves planning, writing and speaking with an overall view to promoting the best interests of that organization. Students who choose public relations are prepared for positions in fundraising, promotion, event planning, advertising, marketing, community affairs, and many more diverse fields.

Theatre courses rely on a workshop model to develop students’ practical skills in acting, directing, set design, playwriting, and other aspects of performance. Students who focus on theatre prepare for many diverse careers in the theatre—including performance, production and technical aspects.
