Malone’s football program began play in 1993 and has remained a strong competitor in the challenging Mid-States Football Association throughout the years, winning conference titles in 1995, 1996, and 1998. A new era began when the Pioneers kicked off the 2006 season as new head coach Mike Gardner took over the reins of the program. Gardner experienced tremendous success in just two seasons as the head coach at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas where he led the Bluejays to a 20-3 record and back-to-back NAIA playoff appearances before coming to Malone. Now, in two seasons as head coach at Malone, Gardner has directed the program to a 7-4 record in '06 and an 8-4 mark in '07, a major turnaround from the 3-7 Malone record of 2005. The Pioneers have also earned two consecutive NCCAA Victory Bowl berths under Gardner's tenure including a convincing 45-17 victory at Geneva in last year's contest.
