Sharing in the experience of making a difference and impacting lives

Deep in the heart of the City of Canton’s Southeast section stands The Martin Center, recently transformed from an aged and abandoned former elementary school into a vibrant activities center. It's a place that junior communication arts major Jonathan Crabbs spends much of his time.

“I first became involved with The Martin Center two years ago because I was searching for an opportunity to serve in the community of Canton and I had a desire to work with inner-city youth,” he said.

Overseen by ChildReach Ministries, Inc., The Martin Center houses a basketball court, weight room, recording studio, game room, computer lab, café, and a dance studio.

“The Martin Center offers a safe environment for the youth in Canton that allows these kids to play basketball and hear a message of hope and truth about God,” said Crabbs. “I love that The Martin Center is making a difference and impacting the lives of those around the community and I love that I get to share in this experience.”

Occasionally, that experience extends beyond The Martin Center’s walls to a retreat called EPIC (every person is crucial) - that teaches kids overarching themes in Scripture, and how their lives fits into God's story.

"We take the kids out to a campground and share the Gospel message and play tons of fun games and activities,” Crabbs said.

What began as an act of service has evolved into an internship for Crabbs this semester. In addition to interacting with the students, he also works on The Martin Center's social media and helps operate a food bank there.;
