The Malone University College of Theology, Arts, and Sciences – Department of Music will present its annual Homecoming Gala concert Friday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center for Worship and the Fine Arts, located at 2600 Cleveland Avenue N.W. in Canton.  The concert will feature performances by the Pioneer Spirit Marching Band, Women’s Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and University Chorale, with special guest alumni artists: Cheryl Nauman Munkascy (class of 1973) and Don Keelan-White (class of 1970).  Former theatre professor and director Morris Pike and musical director Don Murray will also participate in the evening.  The event is free and open to the public.  A program follows:

 

David Donelson, Ed.D. is professor of music and Music Department chair at Malone University. He conducts the University Chorale and Malone Chamber Choir. He also teaches choral conducting and the music history classes. Previously, he was professor of music and Music Department chair at Crown College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a position he held for 18 years. Dr. Donelson is a graduate of Bethel University (St. Paul, MN) and Bethel Theological Seminary where he earned a master’s degree in sacred music. He earned a doctorate in higher education administration with a concentration in music education from Nova Southeastern University (Ft. Lauderdale, FL).  Dr. Donelson has been active in church music ministry, directing multi-faceted music programs. From 1988 - 1990, he served as musical director and conductor of the Delta Choral Society based in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada). Choirs under his direction have sung at the National Association of Evangelicals and have recorded television and radio ads for the Dayton Hudson Corporation. They have toured throughout all parts of the United States and have traveled overseas seven times. In the summer of 2004, Dr. Donelson was invited to work within the music department at the Salzburg Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria where he conducted and sang with the Cathedral Choir. He was the recipient of the Crown College Teaching Excellence Award in 2004 and the Outstanding Educator Award in 2007 for his work in exemplary service to the music department and the college as a whole. Throughout northeastern Ohio, Dr. Donelson has been the guest conductor for high school honor choirs and is frequently called upon to adjudicate choral festivals and solo/ensemble contests. Dr. Donelson is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators Association, College Music Society, and Ohio Music Educators Association.

 

Rachel Núñez is associate professor of music, vocal coordinator and director of the Women's Concert Choir at Malone University.  She received her bachelor of arts degree in music from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where she was a member of the Nordic Choir under the direction of Weston Noble.  She received her master of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Akron, Ohio.  Ms. Núñez's opera performances include roles in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado, Mozart's Le Nozzi di Figaro, Smetana's The Bartered Bride, Ward's The Crucible, Pucinni's Gianni Schicchi, and Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel.  Her oratorio work includes participation as a soloist in Handel's Messiah.  She has served as an apprentice for the Dorian Opera Theatre Summer Festival and has also appeared as a soloist at the Stan Hywet Concert Series in Akron, Ohio.  Ms. Núñez's professional affiliations include the American Choral Directors Association, the National Collegiate Choral Organization, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Ohio Music Education Association. She is also a member of The Friends of Music in Akron, Ohio. Ms. Núñez and her husband, Jacinto, reside in Stow, Ohio with their son, Manuel.

 

Cynthia Bridges, PhD  is associate professor of music and coordinator of instrumental studies at Malone University. She conducts the Marching and Symphonic bands, teaches music education methods courses, instrumental conducting, supervises student teachers, and serves as advisor for the Malone chapter of the Ohio Collegiate Music Educators Association. Prior to teaching at Malone, she served as director of bands at Christian Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii. She also served as graduate assistant with the University of Hawaii Bands from 1997-2002, where she earned a PhD in 2005. Dr. Bridges has conducted festival bands in Hawaii and Ohio, adjudicated concert, jazz and marching festivals, and served as a clinician at the 2003 Hawaii Music Educators Association conference. In addition to her experience in Hawaii, Dr. Bridges taught seven years in the Texas public schools. She served four years as the director of bands for the Marion Independent School District in Marion, Texas. Her bands in Marion received UIL Sweepstakes awards, numerous first division ratings for concert performance and best in class awards at the prestigious Westlake Marching Festival for three consecutive years. Her music activities beyond Malone include serving as president for District VIII of the Ohio Music Education Association. She enjoys spending time with her husband, John, serving her profession, playing the French horn in various ensembles, singing in the choir at church, gardening, and playing golf.
