6236 - Program of Exercise Science Purchases The Bod Pod
6236 - December 9, 2011
The Malone University Department of Natural Sciences – Program of Exercise Science announces that it is now offering state-of-the-art body composition assessment analysis to the general public. The Bod Pod is a highly accurate, safe, non-evasive tool that determines percentage of lean body mass and fat mass.
Body fat, rather than weight, is a better predictor of health, according to Donald D. Hensrud, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic. One's body composition is a direct reflection of overall physical activity and nutritional habits. An accurate body composition analysis can identify important changes in lean mass components that a traditional scale cannot. Changes in body composition – which happen slowly over time – often occur without any change in weight. Unhealthy fat levels increase a person's risk of hypertension, type II diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, coronary heart disease, gall bladder disease, and certain cancers.
The Bod Pod provides proven accuracy using whole-body density measurement, using a dedicated computer system with data management capability. The system uses the principle of whole body densitometry to estimate the amount of fat and lean tissue in the body. Body composition is then estimated using known prediction equations based on age, gender, and race. Subjects as tall as 7 feet and as heavy as 500+ pounds can be measured in the Bod Pod. Total test time is approximately five minutes, with two minutes inside the Bod Pod.
